Why Do People Buy Fake Designer Bags Or Fake Designer Anything?

When I see a woman wearing a fake bag,
then I start to think the rest of her ensemble is a cheap fake too.
And, that every rock in every piece of jewelry she is wearing is fake.

Is that a bad assumption? - Sure it is.
Is it wrong to assume? - Yep.
But to me, that's what a fake bag does to your look.

Buying a nice Nine West bag, Lucky bag, Fossil - whatever - puts a lot more class in what you're trying to project to others.
It also doesn't let people assume the wrong thing about you.

For heavens sake, respect yourself!

I am glad I have seen this post as I have wanted to rant for a while.
Whilst I can understand people who buy one because they don't know the difference what I object to are really wealthy people here in London - and I am talking multi millions - who carry the fakes because they think we more ordinary girls won't know the difference (I am refering to the obscene ammount of "Birkins" floating arround Knightsbridge). They may be wearing them with real mink but the way I see it the earings are probably fake as is many other things about them.(And I don't mean surgery)

Most importantly and I hope anyone who caries a fake reads this - not only are they distributed by the mafia who also control people smuggling and prostitution, with the two often going together, but if you ever take your fake Hermes, LV or Chanel through a French airport they have the right to not only impound it but to fine you €200,000 which is quite a lot in dollars and sterling these days.:crybaby:

Your post inspired me to see if there were any articles online about people being fined for trafficking fake goods through the airport, and I found this interesting article:

The line about fake medicine is heartbreaking.

Sorry, but that's just not true.
All just to prove a point:
I wear a large diamond solitaire, Old Navy jeans and tees, Nike's and carry a $3k Chanel bag everyday.
I can afford the nice clothes and the nice bags. . . but I don't care about clothes or shoes. It's not my thing.
Contrarily, I see beautifully dressed women waltz into the Chanel boutique at NM sporting Chanel fakes that were never even made.
You just CANNOT know by judging a person's clothing choices. . . it doesn't even make sense.

IDK, but if someone is wearing cheap clothes it seems like pretty good evidence that their handbag is a fake--I mean, if a woman won't even spend $100 for a new pair of jeans, it seems unlikely that she would pay $3000 for a handbag. Definitely it's not conclusive; I've left the house with a nice bag and American Eagle sweats plenty of times, and I know moms in particular might be waiting to get their post-pregnancy figure back. Still, Reeboks and a real Chanel?! I don't think so!

I agree that teenagers carry fakes the most, but that's somewhat forgivable because they don't know any better. But parents telling their kids stealing is okay by carrying fakes is the WORST!

Oh totally--like I said, it's not conclusive! Our opinions might also differ a bit because in Philly and especially NYC, people tend to look nicer when they're out and about. I'm originally from the Midwest, and in my hometown it seems pretty common to go out in the same clothes you lounge around your house in.... so there are definitely regional differences, especially because with Canal Street we get SO many fakes here.

I want to comment on the "mom"/wardrobe thing, too. I find a ton of my stuff at Filenes, the BCBGMaxAzria & Burberry outlets, Ralph Lauren, Nordstrom rack, etc. and I love my designer clothes - but I rarely leave the house (with the kids, at least) dressed to the nines. However, I'm always carrying an authentic, designer handbag. Sometimes it's just not practical to be prancing around in manolos when you're chasing after a 4 and 2 year old and you're 7-months pregnant. It's maternity jeans and steve madden flats for me, most of the time....

And, I'm one of those women who, if put to the choice, will pick a designer bag over a designer piece of clothing because my bags are an investment - and will be passed down to my daughter someday. So, I've probably come across as a bit of a wardrobe contradiction myself when flying through the grocery store. But does that mean I'm carrying a fake oh h#&l no! :nogood:

This is me as well- I love my jewelry and my bags- and I certainly don't try to go out looking "cheap" in my clothing, but I tend to wear my comfortable old navy jeans and shirts mixed up with a few things from anthropologie, target, or wherever else I find something I like (I LOVE my chucks, LOL!). But my jewelry and bags tend more towards David Yurman, Tiffany, and Chanel. That's just how I am- clothes wear out more quickly, and my bags and jewelry are investment pieces (my 3-year old tells everyone she's going to get Mommy's purple purse when she's grown up- meaning my 08 prefall purple flap- it's SO cute). I have to say, though- I'd never knowingly be caught dead wearing anything fake. It takes 5 minutes of searching the internet or your local bookstore to see how horrible they truly are, and how they DO contribute to terrorism, child labor, and many other disgusting practices, in addition to all the copyright violations.

Nikes and Reeboks are worlds apart. I think I saw a pic of your ring in the E-ring thread--obviously that gorgeous rock would give you away!

It's not about the cost of the clothes, per se. It's about the overall appearance.

Elara and Swanky - I think we should rename our wardrobes "T.M.U." (the mom uniform). Sounds like we all dress pretty much the same! lol!:roflmfao:

Thanks :smile1:
It's just the point. . . KWIM?
I just have such an issue w/ other people judging people based solely on their personal appearance.
People have been talking for years about the millionaire that lived next door driving his 22 yr old Ford pick up and mowing his own lawn in front of his teeny little first house.

There's no rhyme or reason as to who carries them. . . and no matter who carries them they're still not ethical, they're illegal.

I know a lot of people still don't believe they actually contribute to terrorism or other terrible things, but that's just a lack of educating one's self . . . or just choosing not to believe it to justify their purchases of counterfeit goods.

^^LOL! In my defense, I do not wear high rise "Mom jeans"
I do favor Anthropologie, Banana Republic, JCrew and Old Navy though!

Oh Lord - DEFINITELY did not mean to infer MOM JEANS! I've ordered my hubby to shoot me on sight if I even so much as look at a pair. :p If I lost the last of the weight after #3, it's back to 7's, Joe's and Rich-n-Skinny's. Swanky, you probably cut a nicer figure than me, anyway. haha

I spend more on had bags then on clothes. To me it just makes more sense. I have LV's and Chanel's that I have had for years that I keep in their dust bags and boxes. They are in great shape and I continue to take them out and use them. Clothes you wear for 2-3 years and out they go. I love Jcrew and Anthropologie and always well all most always buy there on sale so I can afford expensive bags. I sometimes think these people that buy knock-offs don't realize what they are buying into......terrorism.....child labor etc.
You can always tell fake a mile away!!
