Why Do People Buy Fake Designer Bags Or Fake Designer Anything?

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate

Designer goods are meant to be a certain price, they are so much $$$$ because they want to keep their goods up there. If they lower the price, then it becomes available to everyone, therefore, their brand is not "ohh la la" anymore.

Buying a fake is like trying to be something you're not.

I live in NYC, and have walked around soho and canal st with my real bags, and of course everyone looks at you like your real bag is fake cuz ur in that area. Like, the only reason anyone goes to soho is to buy a fake bag??? plus those idiots who sell them approach u like yea we know its fake, ugh i hate them!!

Slightly OT I know, but comments like this just seem so. . . ignorant{?} to me.
I think most of our own Mom's wear 'mom jeans' but that doesn't mean they'd carry illegal counterfeits too. :s
I feel comfortable in saying that there's as many fashionable wealthy folks sporting fakes as there are out of fashion moms.
Judging whether someone is carrying a fake based on their clothing choice just doesn't make sense to me.
I see more adorable 17 yr olds carrying fakes than anyone else.

IDK, but if someone is wearing cheap clothes it seems like pretty good evidence that their handbag is a fake--I mean, if a woman won't even spend $100 for a new pair of jeans, it seems unlikely that she would pay $3000 for a handbag. Definitely it's not conclusive; I've left the house with a nice bag and American Eagle sweats plenty of times, and I know moms in particular might be waiting to get their post-pregnancy figure back. Still, Reeboks and a real Chanel?! I don't think so!

I agree that teenagers carry fakes the most, but that's somewhat forgivable because they don't know any better. But parents telling their kids stealing is okay by carrying fakes is the WORST!

OK, I have to chime in on the clothing issue! I have money, enough to buy whatever I want. The thing is, I LIKE wearing old beat up clothes. I actually have some tops from bargain basement places simply because I liked them. I like to have clothes to kick around in and saving the good stuff for special occassions or when I just feel like dressing up. Most sales assistants look at me like I am wasting their time when the have no idea of the names hanging in my closet. I always have an expensive bag with me though and for someone to assume it is fake because of what I choose to wear really bums me out. No hard feelings, just try not to judge a book by its cover so often ;)

That said, I once bought a fake Gucci in Turkey, but ended up throwing it away. I just hated the whole idea of it once I had been talked into buyig it by a VERY persuasive stall hawker.

yeah, i have to say something about the clothes thing too. i have seen just as many women with manolo shoes and jil sander coats with a fake lv here in the city. my mother doesn't always dress to the nines when she's carrying her designer bags either. it doesn't mean they're fake... see, that's the problem with judging someone based on what they're wearing or carrying. it's a slippery slope, and the perception is usually wrong.

Oh totally--like I said, it's not conclusive! Our opinions might also differ a bit because in Philly and especially NYC, people tend to look nicer when they're out and about. I'm originally from the Midwest, and in my hometown it seems pretty common to go out in the same clothes you lounge around your house in.... so there are definitely regional differences, especially because with Canal Street we get SO many fakes here.

I think its a matter of priority, there are plenty of woman on tpf who said they buy cheaper clothes so they can get the nicer bags. To them the bag is an investment, while clothes on the other hand tend to go in, and out of style. To some people clothes are just not important. So I wouldn't say just because they're wearing cheap clothes means they're bag is fake. There are plenty of wealthy woman who wear expensive clothes, and wear fake bags. I personally did NOT condone fakes, even before I became a member of TPF just because I felt like you were posing if you carried one. Now since becoming a member here, and learning more about fakes and where the money goes, it solidifies my stance against them.

In response to WonderWoman-

Fake bags are illegal and hurt the original brand. Designer inspired brands are legal, but they should have significant enough differences from the originals. I have seen many of these websites where stock images from the orignial brand are used and they claim that all details are exact. You can not tell me that this is right, it is stealing! I have started to sell Chanel purses on eBay and am faced with selling limits, such as I can only sell two Chanel purses every thirty days. This hurts my business. Do you know why these selling limits were put into place? eBay has been sued by Chanel, Tiffany and others because of all the fakes that have been distributed and sold on the site. eBay is tired of being sued and is now forced to crack down on honest sellers and dishonest alike just to try to stop the fakes. I wish there were no fakes out there, as I think they look cheap and there are so many gorgeous purses out there for less but where you can get a similar look. For example, I just purchased this Bebe purse for $150.00 it has the softest leather and gold studs, I think its great.

I am very sorry... but Everyone knows that your an obvious honest seller:tup: I hope things go well with you. And i hope ebay will let more sellers like you to sell their bags...

I'll go ahead and chime in on the clothes thing too. I wear mostly inexpensive stuff - lots of basics from Old Navy and the Gap, and sometimes Target. Most of my dressier stuff is either midrange (Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein) or from mainstream chains like Ann Taylor. I almost always wear jeans and a tshirt or sweater with a casual coat, but my shoes and handbags are always designer. I honestly don't care if people judge me or the authenticity of my accessories based on my wardrobe, because to me that's just silly. I don't assume someone's bag is fake just because they're wearing less-expensive clothing.

I don't buy or condone fakes, because I feel that it's wrong to steal intellectual property and I don't want to buy a poor-quality bag. Even when I made less money I'd rather buy a no-name bag than carry a fake. That's just my opinion, though. If others prefer to carry a fake, that's their prerogative. But if a friend or family member were to ask my advice, I'd tell them not to buy the fake.
