Why Do People Buy Fake Designer Bags Or Fake Designer Anything?

I have several real bags and several fake ones. I'm not sure what the big deal about it is. People around here buy fake bags like crazy, most of the time you can't tell the difference between the real and fake ones if they are better quality fakes. Whats it matter if she says it's real or fake....as long as she's happy with whats shes bought. Maybe i'm just weird but i love some of my fakes more than i do some of my real bags, and i take pride in both my real and fake ones, because i love what i bought. Some of my fake bags i treat as if they real simply because i like them so much and i only carry them ever so often so they wont get dirty or tore up.You all act as if it's some huge deal that someone bought a fake bag and don't mind....lol shoot people buy fakes here all the time and love them. I know a woman who sells them up to a festivle we have here every year and people buy those bags like crazy one year she sold every single thing she had, she was making money hand over fist up there, in fact two people got in a fight over one bag because both of them wanted it, no joke.Personally i don't see a big deal in buying a fake bag, as long as ya like it.

As long as the person who carries fakes does not go around to boast her bags are authentic, I'm pretty okay wtih it.

As long as sellers doesn't do dishonest/inethical businesses by selling fake bags and claim they are authentic, I guess I'm pretty okay too. But still, I will not buy any fake bags in any circumstances.

It's illegal, and it's theft, IMO. Those designers put a lot of money and work and creativity into the designs of those bags only to be ripped off.

As for people who buy designer bags as a showy status symbol, well to each his/her own, I guess...it's just not me. If I buy it, it is for ME and not for someone else I feel the need to impress. Quality, durability, aesthetics - if I love it, I buy it and if it costs $20 or $10,000 it's for ME and it's no one's business. The fakes, however, ARE someone else's business - the designers who've been stolen from.

wow. well I'm from WV also and I take A LOT of pride in carrying my REAL bags. IMHO, a fake bag makes you a poser. you are buying it because you *want* people to think it's real.... don't try and sell me on the BS that you "liked the style" .

I am glad I have seen this post as I have wanted to rant for a while.
Whilst I can understand people who buy one because they don't know the difference what I object to are really wealthy people here in London - and I am talking multi millions - who carry the fakes because they think we more ordinary girls won't know the difference (I am refering to the obscene ammount of "Birkins" floating arround Knightsbridge). They may be wearing them with real mink but the way I see it the earings are probably fake as is many other things about them.(And I don't mean surgery)

LOL this made me burst out laughing. How ridiculous is that? Are people so cheap? I mean, buying a Birkin is probably the same as one of us buying a $10 handbag.

I just think that the point in buying a designer bag is the quality (for me, anyways-I don't like ones that are splattered with the designer name, so most people wouldn't even know it was a designer anyways). Buying a fake isn't buying quality, it's attempting to buy status.

I think it is important to stay away from fakes. It funds terrorism and it looks kinda silly. I agree that you should look for quality. It pays off in the long run. A friend came back from China with her fake Coach she paid $7 for. It was falling apart that week. Go figure.

I just wanted to share that while I was waiting at a dr's appt, a woman was in the lobby with a suitcase full of fake purses. People were lined up wanting to buy. I hate that its so common and acceptable when it looks like cheap plastic and they are still charging in upwards of 90 bucks for something cheap. When I carry my real bags people assume they are fake and when I point out the differences, they refuse to believe there is one. Sooo frustrating!!!

In response to WonderWoman-

Fake bags are illegal and hurt the original brand. Designer inspired brands are legal, but they should have significant enough differences from the originals. I have seen many of these websites where stock images from the orignial brand are used and they claim that all details are exact. You can not tell me that this is right, it is stealing! I have started to sell Chanel purses on eBay and am faced with selling limits, such as I can only sell two Chanel purses every thirty days. This hurts my business. Do you know why these selling limits were put into place? eBay has been sued by Chanel, Tiffany and others because of all the fakes that have been distributed and sold on the site. eBay is tired of being sued and is now forced to crack down on honest sellers and dishonest alike just to try to stop the fakes. I wish there were no fakes out there, as I think they look cheap and there are so many gorgeous purses out there for less but where you can get a similar look. For example, I just purchased this Bebe purse for $150.00 it has the softest leather and gold studs, I think its great.

My dear friends. I do not own any fake bags, but I know people who do. I also do not own any LV or Gucci bags, since I live in NYC and with so many fakes around it just doesn't make sense to get a real thing and I am not buying a fake one. Working with clients I can tell you just as an observation that a lot of girls who do purchase fakes do it out of necessity, "I want to have an LV bag, but don't have $1500 to spend". For the sake of their self esteem (being proud of the product they carry, not feeling like a fake along with the bag that they purchase) I recommend to look for a more affordable designers, still brand names but in the budget. There are plenty of Dooney & Bourke bags for example that range in price from $100 - $800 all made in Italy and come with a varanty. It does pay off for your own sake to purchase a legitimate product and not a fake. I am a big fan of Dooney, and Furla and Banana Republic if you are running on a budget and can't afford an expensive piese. Plus if you do live in the city like NYC there are always sample sales and sales where you can find authentic bags for a great price and wear it proudly.

Maybe if the Fashion Houses put the prices down on their handbags and merchandise there wouldnt be as many fakes out there but, I guess that defeats the purpose of buying the fakes in the first place since people buy fakes for the name and the luxury. I agree buying fakes are wrong and its stealing but the prices on the authentic bags are sometimes ridiculous but thats just my opinion.

Thank you Olidivia,

I am a Life Coach and specialize in Coaching for Women. Sometimes we don't even realize when we do damage to ourselves by these minor actions. Little details in our every day life is what brings us down in a long run. Be proud of who you are, and what you are wearing :)

The idea of fakes doesn't bother me from a fashion standpoint in the least...but from an ethics, illegal standpoint, very disturbing. It's illegal to steal intellectual property. (repeating myself but it bares repeating.) If you steal the words out of the book I wrote, I get to sue you. If you steal someone's designs, the designer gets to sue you. If you buy stolen property/ideas/words/books/cds/bag/etc, you contribute to crime and theft.

I think all y'all are taking this real/fake handbag stuff just a little too far lol they are just handbags it's not life or death. I love handbags real or fake i don't really care. I don't care what happens if i buy a fake one or don't buy a fake one if i like what i see no matter if it's real or fake I'm gonna buy it and enjoy it.You all act like OMG it funds terrorists OMG this OMG that lol you all realize how silly that sounds? Goodness people it's JUST handbags, don't y'all think you are being just a bit overly dramatic about this fake bag stuff. Not if people stop buying fakes its gonna stop all the terrorists or what have ya, drug money will fund that stuff just fine. You may or may not like fake bags for whatever reason but it's not really worth all this acting as if it's some awful sin, they are just bags. Besides millions of people carry fake bags every day and the world aint stopped turning yet and apparently there are far more people who like fake bags and enjoy them, than not because i see far to many people with them. As i said around here people go crazy over them and buy them like crazy and when I'm outta the state i see them all over the place too so it's not just here. lol y'all need to relax. You say people just want everyone to think the fake bags they have are real. What does it matter? So what if they want people to think that or not, who really cares? I know most people got more to worry with than if some bag is fake or real and if they are saying that it's fake or real, most people could care less, because they got far more important things to care about.People might sell fakes on ebay, but so what? not as if it's gonna stop because a few people don't buy fake bags, it's gonna go on no matter what, and all the complaining in the world isn't gonna stop fake bags from existing and it isn't gonna stop them from being sold or enjoyed.Whine whine whine about copyrights and stealing and what not....still aint gonna stop nothing, it isn't gonna stop millions of them from being sold every day.Besides who in the world buys designer bags on ebay anyway? That would just be stupid, and if people are stupid enough to shop on ebay than my guess is they probably deserve to get ripped off, because it's ten times more trouble than going to a store and you are more than likely getting ripped off anyway no matter if it's real or fake....they gotta make money some how so they are gonna sell it for more than they really should, i would know i looked for a car on there once and they was asking 3,000-5,000 more than blue book price so after seeing that i don't worry with ebay anymore because it's all way over priced, and i can walk out my front door and buy a real bag in 20 minutes as opposed to going though the hassle of ebay. Just go to macys or a factory store or whatever and buy your bag, that away you know what your getting is real and never been used, and you don't gotta worry about that, plus it's far less trouble and far less time consuming. I've never bought a thing off ebay and if i want a real designer bag i just go to the store and buy it like a normal person, i just went to macys and bought a new coach bag a few weeks ago. Fake bags at least the ones I've bought anyway are nice and as i said most you can't even tell if it's real or fake, and none of them have tore up in anyway shape or form and I've had a lot of mine for several years, but than again i take care of my stuff (both real and fake) i don't throw it around like a lot of people seem to so that might make some difference too, plus i buy the better quality fakes so that might make some difference as well. I'm not rough on any of my bags and i usually take everything out of them when i get home and wrap them back up in dust covers until I'm ready to use it again and while i have them out i take care of it and see to it i don't get it dirty or set in the floor or what have ya. I guess no matter what i say people will still be petty and argue back and forth about the real/fake thing and make some huge deal outta it which is just silly to act as if it's some horrible sin, just enjoy your bags no matter if they are real or fake, i know i do and i know theres not a thing wrong with it either. The 30 of you or so who post here might think it's horrible but theres a million + people out there who thinks it's just fine or else they wouldn't buy them like i see them bought. As some of you have said theres celebs carrying fakes, theres rich people carrying them and so on, obviously fakes bags aint so horrible or else those people wouldn't be carrying and enjoying them because they can afford real ones if they want them.

I live in Vancouver, BC and I swear every second person on the street has a fake LV or Prada or Gucci and for those of us who actually spend the money on the real product, our statement is lost because those very people who spend $5 on a purse think my $500 purse is just like theirs...a fake! And when they ask you what "little market" you bought your wallet or purse at and you tell them its real, they laugh at you and actually don't believe you. Whatever.
It's an atrocity, I know. My sister is a fake bag whore and has every tacky Prada bag on the market and I swear to God, I wonder sometimes why she just doesn't save whatever $ she spent on that fake and spend it on maybe a non designer bag that looks decent and yet isn't an obvious cheap, tacky fake designer bag.
It's sad really but I've wanted to invest in the Louis Vuitton Manhattan GM bag for some time now but it's effect will be lost here in a city full of fakes! What would be the point?
Sorry to sound so negative but it seriously picks my *&*$!

I completely agree with you. I see young girls carrying so many fake chanel, gucci, and LV and it makes me think :push: bc there are so many fakes its hard to tell the real ones apart and the real ones get mistaken for a fake sometimes. I also can't believe a few people have come up to me and asked if my purse was real and how much I paid for it? How rude is that?!?!

But you know what to each their own I'm not going to lecture people who buy fakes they can do whatever they want. I don't buy fakes it is illegal for one and esp. the big issue is copyright infringement and I don't support any of that!! I only buy authentic purses and I don't care if they think my purse is fake or not. I KNOW its real and thats all that matters to me I could care less what they think plus true designer handbag connoisseurs and tpfers out there will know my bags are real ;):graucho:
