Why Do People Buy Fake Designer Bags Or Fake Designer Anything?

They're not illegal to own in many places, US included.

In the United States, the law against selling fake bags is the federal trademark law also known as the Lanham Act. Trademarks are names, phrases, designs or marks that identify the source and manufacturers of products. Each state also has its own trademark laws, as do most countries outside of the United States.

Go to www.dhs.gov (homeland security) and search "counterfeit handbags". See what the U.S. government says about it and why they are arresting people that sell them.

Yes, but they are still not illegal to own.......

It's a trend and everyone has them.
No matter how wrong that sounds.
My little sister's friends have fakes ranging from Coach to Hermes.
I asked my little sister why and they say because if you don't have them, you will be left behind.
I was like but these are fakes and even when I ask my mom.
She was like "If a rich person is carrying a fake, nobody will know"
Im like o.0 OMG no mom. A trained eyes can see and how embarrassing it is would be to be caught with a fake on your hand.
She was like "well I dont know but my friends buy fakes too and they are rich ppl's wives"

I am glad my dad prohibits us from buying fakes because he doesnt want ppl to think badly of us.

I think what upsets or annoys me the most is when someone who carries an identical style but fake bag as you come up to tell you that "i only paid $200 bag for this bag that you paid $2000 for, and I don't see any difference in the two bags"... Errr... What am I suppose to say to that??

"And it has just as much class as you, dear"

some people are tricked, and really think it.is real.

the ones who knowingly buy it us because they don't want to spend their money, but they want to look like they did.they want people to know they have good, taste, that, they know about more high fashion than the stuff available at their income level.

the same reason people stuff a cheap above ground pool in the backyard during summer....it may not be real but it gets the job done.and its still impressive to some people!

I don't think a leather bag determines how much class you have.

I don't think she meant that a leather bag determined how much class you have. I took it to mean that buying a fake bag was not a sign of class, to which I would agree. I hate fakes. If you can't afford a designer bag, then buy the nicest quality non fake bag you can afford, leather or not. That is class IMO.

As much as I would enjoy having certain bags that I can't afford, I would never buy a fake. There are known criminal/terrorist ties to counterfeit merchandise and I would not support those enterprises.

Additionally, I would feel no confidence in wearing a fake bag. I would know it was fake even if it fooled others. I buy my bags because I love them and enjoy using them, not to impress other people. There is a great satisfaction in saving up some money and purchasing a real bag - even a preloved one!

I always thought that people carried them because...
1. They were lied to when they bought/received it and believed it was real
2. They were trying to impress someone by pretending that it was real

Then I asked my friend's SIL who proudly showed me her fake LV saying that it was fake and she bought it simply because she liked the pattern and could not afford the real thing.

Ignorance? My first two "LV"s were fake but I bought them in good faith from a consignment store and only found out after on here that they were fake. My usual response is that if you want an LV, Chanel, whatever and you buy a fake you still don't have one, do you?
