Why Do People Buy Fake Designer Bags Or Fake Designer Anything?

I know this is an older thread but I found it very interesting & reminded me that a while back I watched a documentary series 'Fakes' and found it informative and enlightening & thought some of you may also find it interesting.

Honestly many years back I owned a random fake item here or there but since watching the documentary I could never do so again, plus my true appreciation of designer items and their beauty has blossomed into somewhat of a guilty pleasure.

If anyone is on the fence regarding buying/selling of fakes or just interested in how it all works I will attach the link below, there are some confronting scenes but I hope you all enjoy.

People who wear fakes are wannabies, and worst of all...is that everyone knows it is a fake. If you make $50.000 a year and you carry a $3000 bag it is very likely that your bag is fake. You can tell by the rest of the clothes that person is wearing, the jewerly, watches....you have to sustain the bag with a whole look.
I have no respect for these people. I rather have a no name well done purse that fits my lifestyle than a pathetic fake one, even if it looks real.

You can easily afford a $3k bag with a $50k income.

I don't like knockoffs personally. I know that the counterfeit bags are often made in sweatshops and the money is funneled to terrorist organizations or organized crime units. Unfortunately, the people who get arrested for selling counterfeit goods are the guys (and gals) on the street who are just trying to make a living, often in the US illegally and have no other way of supporting themselves.

That being said, I would never not "respect" someone for having a knockoff bag! Respect - or lack thereof - is due to someone's CHARACTER, not their material possessions. I have friends who have tons of knockoffs because they like the style and cannot afford the real ones. The fact that someone else would not respect them as people because they cannot afford the fancy bags that others carry makes me kind of disgusted.

I definitely agree with this. I can't judge people on their possessions because I don't understand their situation. I personally would rather save for the real thing but I realize that some people do not even value bags that much. I know someone close to me who had a fake Louis and honestly she bought it cause it was cheap and didn't think much of it. When it was worn, she threw it away and bought another bag (another designer, not a fake) . She doesn't collect or have numerous hand bags nor does she consider it something worth investing over.

There are people who will never spend hundreds of dollars or euros on a bag. Either they think it would be crazy or they just can't afford designer purses.
What I tell them if they happen to talk about it,is they had better buy a real Longchamp Le Pliage or any other "cheap" but good quality bag than buy a fake.
First because it's illegal and second because our industry loses lots of money.
Most fakes are made in China, cost nothing to produce and ruin our economy!

I wonder how many people who get all high and mighty about fake bags share software and e books with their friends. That is also illegal.

Both are despicable, but the fake bags bother me more because the bag itself is a lie, and it can never be anything better.

A fake bag will always be fake, pretending to be something it is not. It's a lie that can never become true and a complete waste of quality materials.

An inspired bag is fine, it doesn't pretend to be anything but trendy.

Maybe I just have an odd relationship with objects, but if I am letting something or someone in my life I want it to be hard working, reliable, and genuine.

It's almost impossible not to buy a handbag that does not pay homage to some designer. Most people however are unaware of this. For example, Zara's A/W collection has copied a range of designer products and unfortunately or fortunately done it pretty well.

This is definitely food for thought.

True, but there's a big difference between a bag that pays homage to another and a bag that is using another designer's name and trademark without said designer's permission. Even bags where something extremely close to the exact design has been reused on a cheaper bag... I can't say I would personally buy into that intentionally, but they're not actively misleading the consumer.

I'm not sure the majority of "counterfeit" consumers are being misled. More likely they are unwilling/able to purchase a genuine item and are happy to own a replica. Personally I hold no grudges against this despite the fact that I would never buy a fake.

to be honest, i was a bit offended reading people's harsh comments on this thread... i love fashion and style and i love paying money for the clothes, but in my country we have a quote which says :" before mocking someone for the way they walk, try to wear their shoes for a moment" I think there should be several reasons for the people who don't carry designer bags ,

1. they don't know anything about the difference! seriously some people have no idea about chanel or lv or gucci or marc jacobs... they don't even care about it! they might be rich, or they even dress nicely, but it doesn't mean that they are a fashion geek or they know all about it... some people just don't know.

2. the 2nd reason is that people can't access geniune designer bags... sorry to say that but some of the people who made harsh comments, should really try to walk with other people's shoe... eg in my country , everyone dress nicely and they care baout their appearance, but first they are NO official stores of premier brands like prada, marc jacobs, gucci, LV or even retail stores! we have stores like Zara, Mango, Benetton, Sisley and etc, in which items are sold as expensive as the premier ones! a regular ****ty knock off bag is ++100$ here! and i'm not even talking about the fake bags or replicas! random bags with no tag! replicas cost around 400$ here! we have no ebay, no outlet sore, no big sale, no nothing, ( due to the political issues our country has) especially there are few retailers who claim to sell the geniune ones for freaky prices, like 10 grand for a 1000$ bag!(and you still wouldn't know if they are fraud!) so, how would u expect people to afford premier desginer bags? i bought a MBMJ for 620$ from another country when i was on a trip, which was still more expensive than the real price, but if it was in my country it would cost around 1000$, how would u expect people to pay that price for a 400$ bag?! is it rational? so, what should we do? should we just walk naked on the streets, and throw away our money, just not to offend the other people, so they can brag for their authentic 1500$ prada bag that they purchased for half of the price on ebay? or should we just spend 5000$ for the same bag, just because we HAVE to buy the authentic items!

all i'm saying is that there might be people who actually love fashion/style and they can even afford authentic items, but they are not capable of! people should never judge the others before they know what it is all about!
cheers!
