Why Do People Buy Fake Designer Bags Or Fake Designer Anything?

to be honest, i was a bit offended reading people's harsh comments on this thread... i love fashion and style and i love paying money for the clothes, but in my country we have a quote which says :" before mocking someone for the way they walk, try to wear their shoes for a moment" I think there should be several reasons for the people who don't carry designer bags ,

1. they don't know anything about the difference! seriously some people have no idea about chanel or lv or gucci or marc jacobs... they don't even care about it! they might be rich, or they even dress nicely, but it doesn't mean that they are a fashion geek or they know all about it... some people just don't know.

2. the 2nd reason is that people can't access geniune designer bags... sorry to say that but some of the people who made harsh comments, should really try to walk with other people's shoe... eg in my country , everyone dress nicely and they care baout their appearance, but first they are NO official stores of premier brands like prada, marc jacobs, gucci, LV or even retail stores! we have stores like Zara, Mango, Benetton, Sisley and etc, in which items are sold as expensive as the premier ones! a regular ****ty knock off bag is ++100$ here! and i'm not even talking about the fake bags or replicas! random bags with no tag! replicas cost around 400$ here! we have no ebay, no outlet sore, no big sale, no nothing, ( due to the political issues our country has) especially there are few retailers who claim to sell the geniune ones for freaky prices, like 10 grand for a 1000$ bag!(and you still wouldn't know if they are fraud!) so, how would u expect people to afford premier desginer bags? i bought a MBMJ for 620$ from another country when i was on a trip, which was still more expensive than the real price, but if it was in my country it would cost around 1000$, how would u expect people to pay that price for a 400$ bag?! is it rational? so, what should we do? should we just walk naked on the streets, and throw away our money, just not to offend the other people, so they can brag for their authentic 1500$ prada bag that they purchased for half of the price on ebay? or should we just spend 5000$ for the same bag, just because we HAVE to buy the authentic items!

all i'm saying is that there might be people who actually love fashion/style and they can even afford authentic items, but they are not capable of! people should never judge the others before they know what it is all about!
cheers!

This^ makes me say God Bless America!

Counterfeit designer items (Prada, Balenciaga, LV, etc.) are illegal. Period. Maybe if a person can't afford authentic higher priced designer items, go for the less expensive ones...they don't even have to be designer items.
I don't know what country you are in, but what you describe isn't like it is here in the U.S.

my dear, actually there are so many fake items in my country... you can find LV, dior, Jimmy Choo, hermes, and etc everywhere...it's pretty legal and everyone use it! since there are almost NO authentic ones, or just a few ones.
besides, i don't understand what u mean from "less expensive" item... if you're referring to coach, juicy, dooney & brooke sth, etc.. sorry to burst ur bubble, but coach would be still too expensive in my country due to huge taxes/shipping fee. a coach bag will cost at least 800$ here... so, something like prada or marc jacobs will never be found, even if they do, you do the math! ;) we can't find a speedy LV for 300$ on e-bay like people in US and call it a great deal! we have to pay the same price for a replica! i hate it myself when i see too many dior, prada, LV bags on the streets, but this is NOT a crime, since people like to wear something stylish and there are not any, no one can blame them or have a superior look to them..:smile1: i mean, under the circumstances in my country, no one is insane to pay 3000$ for a 800-1000$ bag! ( even if they exist).

Interesting. Do you mind sharing which country or region you are from?

We just have different preferences on how we want to spend our money. I, for one, would be willing to be splurge on bags, or shoes. I don't buy fakes because even if they're as beautiful as the original one, they can never be of the same quality. And what's the use of spending crucial time deciding and contemplating which baby you're gonna take home among the sea of beauties, if it isn't gonna last? ;p

As of now, I only own TB and KS bags, and my best friend already thinks that I'm crazy for wasting my money on them. Even in the future, when I can already afford higher end designer brands, I'd be more than willing buy some as well. She, on the other hand, likes to splurge on jewelries, and I also think she's wasting her money on them. :p Then I also have another friend, who doesn't like splurging on anything at all, yet still looks fashionably great every time I see her. :)

Though I would never buy a fake anything, it's no biggie if others would. While I would rather pout and stick to brands that I can actually afford, others wouldn't mind getting fakes, just so they can wear the style. And that's fine. I guess some people just choose quantity over quality. Just don't go around claiming that it's real, 'cause that's just a whole different story. :amuse:

Agreed! ;) I love bags and would never buy knock offs. I would buy pre-owned as I find them more reasonabely priced. I have a friend who dont buy pre-owned and she prefers knock off as they are brand new....

Although it is always great to buy what is authentic, my daughter who also likes "the real thing" is really not responsible enough to have it. I would rather she have a knockoff than be concerned about devaluing an investment. That is one reason. :smile1:

I wouldn't let my daughter buy a knockoff. I'd encourage her to buy the nicest authentic bag she could afford to keep and maintain. I want her to value good quality and craftmanship in all things, to include handbags.

I know someone who buys knockoffs and I don't really hold it against her. It is definitely sad about the slave/child labor but you can say that about essentially everything we wear - from the Target tank tops to the Nordstrom cashmere. Anyway, I asked her once why she bought knockoffs. She said that she only bought the ones that were so good, it was hard to tell that they were fake. And spending a few hundred rather than a few thousand sounded like good sense to her.

I do agree with that, I did get my first Coach bag when I was 14 and took good care of it BUT I do know that teenagers can be a little irresponsible at times so I cannot justify purchasing an 800 bag for a teenager.
