which store is most beneficial to sign up for their credit card?

Thought that I would weigh in on this. I have to agree with other tPfers that it really depends on which stores are close to you and the quality of the merchandise the stores offer. Also, you need to figure the amount that you expect to buy in any given year. With that being said, I'd have to say Saks offers the best deal - they have double and triple point events almost monthly and fairly frequent EGC events. I especially like the fact that they offer free shipping to all Saks First members - to attain Saks First status you need to spend $1000 in a year. In addition, a Saks card can come with a Master Card that allows you to obtain Saks points for dollars spent outside of Saks. I was able to rack up alot of points last year simply by using my Saks Master Card. I used to have a Nordstrom card but never really liked the merchandise at my local Nordstroms or online. Also, Nordstrom never seems to offer any special deals - although they'll often match special offers from Saks or NM, they never have their own special deals. As far as a Neiman Marcus card, in order to obtain any real benefit, you need to spend $5000 to enter the InCircle program and the rewards don't seem as good as Saks.

To tell you the truth I would not go with any of them since they all charge very high interest rates unless you are of course paying off the balance in full. But anyway I have a Nordstrom card so I would have to recommend that one. I have earned enough points to get the $20 reward and I was able to use it at the rack to get my Coach watch.

You've gotten some great responses to your original question! I have both the NM and Saks card. It is true that the APR charge on both is outrageous if you carry a balance, which unfortunately, I do. The rewards for both are good, which is why I have both. Here's an example of how to make the NM point system work for you: twice annually, they offer events with double points plus a 1000 point bonus. Additionallly, you get double points on your birthday (if you register your birthday with Incircle), the day before and the day after your birthday. So I bought a Chanel lipgloss and got 1000 bonus points, a Dior purse and got double birthday points and now I have 3000 points already. Once you have 5,000, you get a $125 GC. If I wait until the next 1000 bonus point/double point event, I can hit the 5000-point goal for the GC with only spending around $1500-$2000 for the year. You can work the Saks card the same way, although they seem to have more double-point opportunities than NM. Hope this helps!

Saks:
10% off first day, >2% points earn when u spend < $5000 (DB, Triple point event increase the %), if spend > $5000 a year, u earn 4% basicly, the highest basic % off if 6% (i don't remember how much is the limit.) and the EGC event has about 10% on top of the 2% points earn.
All points earn will be send out as gift card in the beginning of each year around Feb.
Best deal that happen every year: F&F event 25% off most things and 15% off skin care and cosmetic.

Nordy:
10% off when u open up the credit card
>2% off from points earn(they have DB, Triple points event )
They send out gift card when u reach $20. They also have a $40 version if u earn $40. Good thing about that is u can buy anything in the store and get the change in cash.
Best deal that happen every year: Private sale 10% off (inc. everything)

Neiman:
10% off first day purchase
gift or gift card at the end of the year
the % u get back is >2% but u have to purchase $5000 a year to get the gift card
Best Deal:
1000 bonus points days
They don't really have a specific best deal compare to other department store but I think they have the best selection.

Macy's
>2% gift card when use macy's visa gold card or above
10?15?% off the first couple days when u open up an account
Many 20% off, 15% off coupons that u can never use on things u want!
Their coupons are mostly useless because their exclusion are just too many!!
I still like their BCBG sales coz they have up to 75% off for BCBG sometimes.

Blooming:
10% off the first day of purchase when open a card account
many pre-sales
ask the sales associate before u purchase anything and they will try to help u save (mostly 15-20%) by doing pre-sales
Best deal: I like their home goods sales. They have good sales for comtemporary clothes and they have a good selection.

These are all I can think of right now....................

I love Nordstroms and as previousy said amazing customer service. No questions asked when you need to return something! But I also think Saks has a great cc also...when Saks has their double/triple bonus events it is so worth it!

I just use my American Express for everything. I try to steer clear of anything that I can hold a running balance on. American Express forces you to control your spending because it's all due at the end of the month. Also, the rewards are pretty great. I save up my points and cash them in for gift cards quarterly. They have Bloomingdales, Banana Republic, Crate & Barrel, Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn, etc.

Just thought I'd add that I use the AmEx wherever and whenever I can and I always deduct the amounts from my checkbook register. Then when the bill comes, I'm not surprised because the money has already been spent as far as my bank book is concerned.

I like Saks the best if you target your purchases for events (EGC and double/triple points). I am considering Bloomingdales for an upcoming large purchase b/c if I time it right I can possibly get 15% (to open the card)of plus a gift card and since no Bloomingdales here, no tax.
I do like Nordstrom the best for customer service and day to day purchases, but their card, for me, is nothing special and I use another card when I shop there.

I love my Sak's card and the gc you get from points are always nice.
Out of the three though I would go with Niemans. They only accept their cards and am-ex and if there is something you want and have to do a charge send you are out of luck unless you have one of the two. You can buy a gc online to use for a charge send but it takes a few days and by then what you want could be gone (I have had this happen with Balenciaga bags).

I only have Barneys, Saks and NM store cards. I pay my balance in full monthly because I hate the interest. Out of the three I prefer Saks the most because of the double/triple point events and it's easier for me to earn GCs. You can also save on ground shipping and tax with out of state purchases with them. Barneys and Saks both offered 10% off purchases that first day when opening an account and both offer free shipping.

Which companies are under the same umbrella corporation?

As in, I'm pretty sure Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf have the same corporate ownership, right? Are there any advantages to buying at Bergdorf's with a NM card, versus say a Saks or Nordstrom one?

I've never had a store card before, but, now that I'm making so many major purchases, perhaps it's a good time to acrue points and credits :smile1:

Bergdorf and Neiman are both owned by the same parent company so I've used my Neiman card at Bergdorf and gotten the same perks(double/bonus points, etc)

I would go with Saks, I'v been using it since July, but overall I enjoy having that card, especially since I can use it outside of Saks on regular purchases. It's like a Discover card to me, except you can't redeem each month.
I do have a NM card, but I ONLY use it at the outlet NM, so the points really mean nothing to me there.
