I used to shop wherever and not worry about brands for clothes, when I was building a wardrobe and needed clothes. These days, however, now that I am more financially comfortable, I exclusively buy more expensive brands for clothes. Not just for quality but also for the fact that I want to be able to resell my clothes to consignment stores, so I at least make some money back. I used to buy several shirts on sale at Gap or old navy, but only wear them a few times or never, and not be able to consign them, even with tags on. I found that I was not being strategic about clothes and was buying because I liked the price more than the actual thing itself on my body, its timelessness, or its versatility to be worn in a professional setting or when I'm running around with kids.
I really like Ralph Lauren sweaters, cardigan, and button downs, and j crew pants (Minnie). But my clothes come from a range of places: Kate spade, Marc by Marc Jacobs, aritzia/Wilfred, talula, roots, Tory burch, Burberry, Michael Kors.
Shoes are the same: a range (Michael kors, Tory,
coach, Ted baker, toms, cole haan). Though, I will always walk into a cole haan store.
Having a minimalist approach to clothes helps me invest in expensive clothes though. After moving cross country/continent four times, I decided to reduce my wardrobe to 40 tops/dresses and 15 bottoms. Right now, I'm well under 30 tops/dresses and well under 10 bottoms. But I wear everything in my closet.
