What’s your everyday bag? Your grab & go?

Hoping not to hijack this thread, but could I ask for advice:

If I want to gift a special
lady (30s, petite and active) with her first "serious" bag and suspect she would prefer it to be an everyday, workhorse, utilitarian, can carry a lot of things and be a potential Mom bag one day, should I just tell her and choose the bag with her rather than just buying one and surprising her?

I suspect we would go for something classic and end up with an everyday and relatively hands free bag like a Neverfull MM or Speedy B 30. I think she would also like but doubt she would want as a first serious bag a Chanel flap or boy, or crossbody or shoulder bag of similar size. I also suspect she would not accept anything more expensive than a Neverfull or Speedy because I mentioned I plan to save up for a house downpayment. (I imagine a lady who could violently break up with you for giving her a Chanel flap must be truly special.)

I know what her bookmarks and Instagram feed looks like and seem to have a fair idea of the range as described above. But I imagine a bag I hope she will use most days will be so personal I may as well let her pick it out. I've had female friends warn they would have loved to have chosen their own wedding ring!

thanks so much! i know she's fine with totes and uses both tote and with zipper for everyday and work use. I don't know if crossbody and zipper would be strong preferences, so thanks for articulating this so well.

For me, a bag is a personal decision and it has to work for my lifestyle and the way I like to carry my bags. I would HATE it if someone else picked me a bag. It’s a lovely gesture, but let her pick it herself or you might spend all that $ on it and find she never carries it as it doesn’t suit her for some reason.

She explained that she loves totes, but thinks it is much easier to find a good tote than a good "real" handbag (I assume this is a more structured one). So she'd love to bring a more formal looking bag like a neutral or classic looking Speedy to work events, more serious social events, and everything short of evening events where you come in a gown. She looked interested in the Kusama bags but immediately said she'd prefer something classic, neutral and not in-your-face.

So it looks like the everyday bag has to be a non-tote bag that can pass as a work bag. It also looks like she'd love such a bag with a cross body option.

I almost outsmarted myself when I asked her whether she'd prefer something like a Speedy or something like a Neverfull, and got told that obviously they are different and a lady needs both.

The mall trip also confirmed she thinks the likes of a Chanel flap or Gucci Marmont are beautiful, but she really wants a first "serious" bag she can also take to work events, less for a night out.

The sales associate opined that the Speedy B 25 is their most popular, and it's the right size for someone like my lady (someone not taller than 5' 6"). The SA said the Speedy B 30 is generally purchased for travel, not everyday use. I'm actually skeptical, as I imagine the Speedy B 25 is too small for those who bring it to work everyday and want to pack a small tablet and a few papers (even if you have a separate laptop bag).

Based on the above, does it sound like the Speedy B is it, much as I think she'd also love a Neverfull?

And is Speedy B 25 a clear choice, or should the 30 still be considered?

The Pouchette Metis is a more "serious" looking work bag. It actually looks very professional. The Speedy 30 is too big IMO. If you are looking at speedy, go for the 25. Per your post, she wants non-tote bag so forget the neverfull.

I agree! Pochette Metis or Speedy B 25 would be perfect for any work event and other activities! Speedy B 30 will look like luggage on his petite gf. My personal go tos are Pochette Metis and Speedy B 20.

to be clear, for the size of Speedy B including as an everyday or work bag, is it just the height of the lady (below 5’ 6” is definitely Speedy B 25)? or does her build and frame also affect this (my gf is not skinny, medium build)? I understand there are many answers and is ultimately very personal.

then for a work bag, stupid question but is it right that most women fit everyday items (without a laptop) into a 25 and it’s much roomier than it looks? the “small” opening is also very personal?

Isn’t the pochette métis much less roomy? Think her perception is the Speedy is more of a work bag, and the Pochette Métis (like Gucci Marmont, etc) is more for going out. Her taste.

The Speedy B 30 is too big and the style is casual IMHO. I would recommend the Pochette metis in Empriente Leather or Alma BB in Epi leather both in black if she is looking for a more "serious" bag. In terms of capacity the Alma is smaller than the PM

thanks, she was looking at classic mono and Kusama speedys on display beside the mono and Kusama Almas the boutique and showed no interest in the Alma as she thinks it’s not something she’d take to work.
