i plan my purchases and save for them (although my second le pliage i bought a few wks ago the morning after i decided i wanted it)

i make the decision based on:
size and shape (ie i like the style)
functionality
durability (will it last and can it take canadian weather) (tpf reviews help!)
and whether it is classic

I chose "planned".

I browse a lot for the 'perfect bag' (if it exists), and will usually take many many months to settle upon one or two bags (amongst the thousands). All of my purchases fill a certain criteria though:

1. It will constantly be in the back of my mind whilst browsing the market.
2. It must describe the 'essence-of-me'.
3. It cannot be of a too similar shape, size, or utility as any of my existing bags.
4. My need for it must exist as a need for its utility and it must fill a hole in my wardrobe.

I find that I never feel guilt on my purchases, regardless of whether it be $500, or $5000+

I buy stuff because I like them. Many arent really spur of the moments as I usually pick a style I like and think about it for a while. I once bought a pink Mulberry Roxanne on a spur of the moment but it had been a style I had been coveting for a while, the pink was perfect for me and it was on sale.

Hmm, now this is very thought out! I'm impressed because I don't do this. I buy the same style or type bag all the time since I am most comfortable with hobo but I do wonder if given the opportunity, if I could venture into a more structured type bag? :thinkin:

I chose planned. I'll be in the stores and then see my "it" bag. Then I stalk my "prey" for a few months hoping it goes on sale or something and/or survey the contents of my closet and start try to decide which bag or bags (depending on the price tag of the potential new bag) have to be sacrificed, if I can even bear to part with any. I make sure all of my financial responsibilities are taken care of first then if all works out, it's a go. Sometimes after waiting so long, I lose the desire for that particular bag and discover new "prey" to stalk. This goes on and on and in the long run, I haven't spent any money. I used to do the whole spur of the moment and justification thing when I was much younger and it was a vicious cycle for me.

I buy a bag at the spur of the moment, regardless of brand. I am not into fashion and might not know the latest season bags. I shop mainly online, I see a bag I like (style and color), then I look for reviews online and then I buy. I like good quality leather bags. I am not into monogram bags, and I tend to go for classics (I don't resell my bags can't get myself to do that, I have given a few away). I have to caution myself most times so I don't get into debt because of my bag addiction.

I think I'm a mix of spur-of-the-moment and planned, but leaning towards the first. When I'm just browsing and shopping, I actually find better things than when I am shopping with something in mind. I find that most of my purchases are actually spur-of-the-moment. Of course, I do have a budget and I (usually!) stick to it. For example, if I plan to buy a hobo bag, I won't really do a lot of research on the brand, etc. I'll just go browse around and see what kind of hobo bags are out there and which ones I like. If I see something I didn't plan on buying but I really love it and can afford it, I'll buy it. I do love browsing around and comparing prices. I always make sure the store I'm shopping at has a good return policy. I want to have the option to return if I decide to.

Roominess. I carry a lot of stuff in my bag on a daily basis and my Kooba bag blends roominess, comfort, and style. LOVE IT!!

This is called the 'Kristin' bag.

Make a choice and then post a deeper explanation, please.

I started thinking about this when a member posted that she felt worthless unless she carried an expensive bag, and that made me start thinking about how we get started on this kind of mindset (that what we own is who we are.)

And that made me start thinking about how we end up buying what we buy...

So there ya go! Have fun, and look deep - be thoughtful - let us get to the root of our buying habits and perhaps help somebody realize that who they are inside is not best represented by the bag they carry. Maybe.
I spend a lot of time deciding what kind of bag I want. I only buy leather, for a number of reasons. I start with designers/brands I already like, and look at the bags they have, and try to find one that fits. If they don't have anything, I come on here to see if the knowledgeable ladies on tPF know something I don't (very likely).

When I find the bag I want, bookmark the page where I found it, wait on it for 2 weeks to a month, and if I still want it I shop for the best deal and go for it. Its not unusual for me to take 6-12 months to analyze, choose, wait, and buy. It sounds agonizing, but its the way my brain works. I'm not loaded by a long shot, and on top of that, I've dealt in the past with a shopping problem, so I can't just buy anything spur-of-the-moment. This is the way I've taught myself to deal with impulse buying.

I agonize over lip balm brands and prices as if they were life-and-death, so a $200-300 bag purchase takes FOREVER!

I wish I could just buy whatever I wanted, but since I am on a tight budget I always have to save up before I can buy the bag I like. I do save up until I can buy the one I like, instead of buying the 'next best thing' like I used to. I did that one for the last time when I bought the LV MC alma instead of the LV MC speedy because I could only afford the alma. Even though I am happy with the Alma I would be much more happier with the speedy, so I've decided to never do that again even if it means I have to plan even more! :)

I used to buy bags on impulse but now that I'm spending more for each bag 700+ the purchases are more planned. I think about what I'm missing, what function I want it to serve and then shop around and read reviews.
