I appreciate all the responses - hope to get more - there's been over 500 views but not nearly the matching poll-taking. You don't have to post, just take the poll

Maybe some feel that none of the options are really applicable to them?

Or that more than one is?

To be honest, none of them are really applicable to me, as I don't really view it as planning, as such, so much as searching for what I need/want, at a vaguely reasonable price.

Planning, to me, is a little formal, for what I do, as I'm not sitting there with a spreadsheet of what I have and what I need, or anything!

More, just thinking; 'OK, I appear to need this, or that; better go and have a look, I suppose?'.

Also, occasionally, I still make the odd spur of the moment purchase.

I always tend to think an 'All of the above.' and/or 'Other - please explain.' option is/are pretty vital for polls, if you want a lot of responses! :D

Also, some of the people viewing this thread won't be bag-buyers, themselves, of course; but will be interested in the results and answers given, for other reasons.

But - if I unexpectedly saw a bag that fit with my idea of what I wanted and fit the qualifications, then - not impulsive so much as "YES, this is my style', so to speak.

Yes, ITA with this.

If one knows oneself well enough and there is sufficient information about the item to go on; one can make a pretty speedy purchase decision, without it being impulsive, as such.

as far as the poll, I think all four choices are true for me, maybe other gals feel the same. I just noticed this r.lauren serape fabric and leather bag in an ad, and love it tons, and I see pix posted on tpf that I would never see IRL where I live, I bought my last k. spade at von maur unplanned, loved the shape and color and mark down price, and I'm planning on behaving till July, then buying the new dooney florentine satchel, if I can find it then

I plan my purchases. As of now, I only have 2 LVs but I might get (DH) another one in time for Mothers Day ;)

It took me 6months before I was able to buy the LV Neverfull. The 6mos included researching which LV bag suited my budget and lifestyle. My initial plan was to just buy 1 LV bag but I was bitten by the LV & TPF bugs LOL hence the Bloomsbury purchase which took me 1 day to decide! (I wanted the Speedy azur 30 but it was unavailable)

I buy because they make me feel good about myself. I like to take care of myself so I check out the designers' websites online, browse tpf, and then decide what I want and go buy it. I usually purchase after I've been eyeing something for a month or 2 in order to avoid impulse buys. Sometimes my interest will change..

I would say most are planned but there have been a couple spur of the moment, a discount/coupon always helps.

I normally see something that I like and then search around to see if I can get it cheaper than retail, if not then I break down and get it. I have my eye on an LV but I know I have to handle some other things financially before I just jump in, so I bought an MK bag hoping it will hold me over until I can make the splurge

I'm not good at planning anything:D So my answer is 1.2.3. I guess...
Sometimes interviews or feature of designers in magazines/blogs catch my attention and make me want their handbags.

I chose Planned~Why~Because I have to plan out most of my purchases, not only my Coach :) I don't spend alot on myself..I wait and see if there is something new I like.If it is a bag, or accessory that I LOVE, then I will plan out my finances to see if it will work with my current budget!!
If not, I don't buy it.I have an amount that I don't go over ..I usually wait for a PCE as well.It gives me an added savings at the FP Coach store(25% off)..An example~ With my March PCE, I purchased a newly introduced Kristin Leather Hippie(in my Avatar)..So it was $258.00 and with my coupon, I spent $193.50..Now it is my only leather bag right now.I don't usually swing that way,lol..But I have fallen hard for this bag!!!

So in the end, to me I got a Great bag at a Great price..I will use it for many years to come...
I like to Plan and know what I'm workin with:) Great question OP;)

I voted planned. Usually I have a few types of bags I want. I keep them in mind and when I get a chance to get them at a certain place/time I go for it! Sometimes an advertisement triggers to think about a bag (if it looks nice and if it would work for me too). Sometimes I just see it in a shop window and then dream about it for a little while.

I'm not a fan of impulse buying (at least if it is the first time I ever see the bag), which makes me miss out on some bags, but then I'm totally impulsive if I do see it again for sale somewhere and it's still on my mind...

Have you ever lost out on a bag because of this?

Oh, yeah, absolutely. Several times, actually. Three of the things I wish I had bought are Coach pieces: an apple green Alexandra, a Kristin clutch, and a Madison gathered clutch OR Sophia. Also, I wish I had bought a Mulberry Bayswater before their prices went up this week. There was a Reed Krakoff bag I loved, too, though I can't remember the name of it now. Before all the trouble I had with their CS, I really considered getting a kate spade Coal tote but never went for it. And it's going to take me about a million years to decide on a Balenciaga before I finally buy one.

But on the other hand, I can't have them all, you know? And all of the deliberation has kind of helped me make a better list of the bags I REALLY want.

I chose tPF because this is where I mostly "find" the bags I want.

I don't read magazines, watch TV or read blogs. The only time I shop is when I go abroad since the range is so limited here in Sweden and the prices higher. I always have a couple of bags I want but don't need. If I see something in store I want and I have the funds for it, I buy it on the spot. If I want something really badly I track it down by calling different stores in Europe and let them ship it too me.
