"What was I thinking?" Bag purchases you regret...

I don't think I've posted here before. Anyway, I love reading this thread because it's helpful to see what everyone has gone through so others considering the said bags can gain a wide perspective. It seems that the most common regrets on bags are: weight, color, size, and impulse purchases. Gosh darn those evil sales!

All my life I've never owned many bags but I made one impulse purchase back in college. I was obsessed with getting a Chloe paddington. I just had to have it. While the bag was made of thick, superb leather, the lock was ridiculously heavy, quickly causing me to lose interest in carrying it. I was very, very lucky in getting my money back though. But my biggest dealbreaker on bags is weight.

Nowadays, if I want a bag, I'll wait it out for a year or two and then see if I'm still interested in it. It's a good rule to go by because it cancels out impulse buys, trend/"it" bag regrets, sales/discount temptations, and unnecessary credit card debt.

I'm embarrassed by my biggest bag regret. I actually bought one of those Dooney multicolor logo bags that were like the LV mulicolor monos that were popular at the time. This was seven or eight years ago. The bag looks like a cartoon. I took it to Disneyworld for a family vacation and never carried it again. I will say the Disney crowd loved it. But in every day life, that bag is beyond silly. And the white is now creamy dingy. And I don't buy logo so why did I buy this? Compared to my other bags, this bag was a bargain but $10. is more than the use I got out of it. It's such an anomaly I have no explanation or excuse but if I have a five year old granddaughter decades from now, I'm all set.

Ah, guilty pleasures...
I love the anomalies. It shows we don't follow the crowds. I have a closet full of kitsch that I alone adore.

And will also serve some future granddaughter very well.

Oh, I have one of those bags - a Dooney w/rainbow hearts. I actually use it for theme park trips and the dog park. :smile1:

I got one too, for my 16th birthday, and it also turned creamy. I remember it was insanely popular at my high school, someone even offered me $ to buy it from me for his gf! But it was a good barrel bag, I used it a lot.

One of my biggest regrets is a Coach pastel scribble hobo. I bought it on LJ for $100 (came with the mini skinny), and I used it for the summer, and that was it. I wonder why I got it, I was over logo bags by then, but I guess the colors just appealed to me. I keep asking my mom to bring it to work to sell it cause one of her coworkers wants it for her daughter, but she keeps forgetting.

I agree with you! I bought one of those bags carried by Serena on Gossip Girl, but the chain handle is so thick and heavy! I should've thought of that before buying.. I think I only carried it 2 times because even empty it's pretty hefty!

I see the Chloe Paddington listed several times. I have a friend that bought it a few years ago - had longed for it forever. Once she had it, it was so heavy she only carried it a couple of times. It's like new and she's saving it for her daughters. She has a pretty great collection and her daughters will get a choice of some amazing bags. As much as I am charmed by the Paddington when I pick it up, I remember my friend and that bag sitting in the closet.

I don't have many regrets. Or I should say, the majority of the bags I regret end up being gifts to my cousins, aunts, friends, ect... If I clear my closet out in October, I have 75% of my Christmas shopping done!

I do have two bags which I have significant regrets about. One is a MJ bag in petal pink. I don't remember the style name, it's from several years ago. It's in the East-West style - and I really have a hard time with bags that are wider than deep. They keep sliding behind me, and I always feel unbalanced. In addition, most pinks aren't my colour. I have two pink bags (a gucci and a tokidoki cita rosa) and I love them - but I love their style more than the colour. This MJ just didn't do it for me on either front.
I gave it to my DM to see how she felt about it, and I think she's ready to sell it also.

The LV Noe in Classic Mono. I love the Noe bag - have for years. I thought about buying one, and then finally bought one in the Mono Canvas. Only problem is - I HATE LOGO!!! I thought it would be acceptable in a style I loved. Actually, it isn't. Then, that Christmas, my DM gave me the bag, and matching Pochette (you cannot use that bag without the pouchette - I am sorry, but it is too unstructured without a pouchette!) in Kenyan Fawn Epi.
Why did I spend the money for the Classic Mono? I was going to sell it, but realized that it does make a great reusable grocery bag. I haul it down to the farmers market every saturday morning, and it's great for fruits, breads, and all my dry groceries.

My regret is an Hermes Kelly. I researched and saved and thought it would be the perfect bag for me. Then I discovered that I need slouchy styles, and I was terribly uncomfortable with my structured Kelly. xxxxxxxxxx. It was a hard decision, but I feel better now.

I bought the Vuitton Geronimos when I was 20. It looked really nice, wearing it across the body, but when I started using it I soon found out it was very VERY impractical. Not only was it too small, but when stuffing the bag with items (though it could only carry a wallet and cellphone) it would continuously slide down my body when walking. I had to pull the bag up every 10 minutes. I ended up selling it on ebay for a fraction of the price.

Sadly, my Bryna Nicole Minna was a bad purchase. Beautiful to look at; impractical to carry. Can't find anything in it, the opening is awkward, and it's a pain to carry. Even though it's a gorgeous hobo, it sits in my closet unused.

That Dooney Satchel was my first designer bag. I remember being so proud of it back then:p. But I did actually use if for about a year, so at least I got my money's worth. Now the poor thing is at the bottom of my closet, hasn't seen the light of day in 7 years or so.

Not exactly a regret... I don't have that many handbags and the ones I have I always think long and hard before buying... but I have one Jerome Dreyfuss bag that drove me insane in the beginning because I decided to get off white colour even though I don't have too much patient caring for my bags so it looked dirty with jeans transfers etc as if I'd just took it straight out of the trash after a few weeks... I learn to live with it now and just send it to cleaner when I need it cleaned...

Bought a BE secondhand and thought it'd be a great winter bag, but it turns out to be too bulky and uncomfortable. :(

And an RM mini Beloved. I bought it on impulse since it was so raved and hyped.
