What started your bag addiction

mine began about 2.5 years ago with the hunt for a perfect black leather bag. My boyfriend told me about ebay (never used it before) and after that I began searching online for info and stuff, and discovered tPF. It was so nice to see my behaviour was 'normal'

It started in my 20s but kicked into full gear in my 40s when I joined tPF. tPF contributed to the attainment of my HG bag. My HG came at a really meaningful time and I appreciate it very much.

I blame tPF for my bag addiction. :p Actually, it started back in 2005 when I gave my MIL some $$ and asked her to pick me up a Jocasi Lombok bag when she was in London. Someone on a fashion board posted a picture of it and I had to have it! I started reading about bags and got hooked.

Years ago,but just in a last few years I've started to buy expensive bags,as my finances got better. And now I can't lower my standards!

Me too! I thought that maybe I should be ashamed for having such high standards in handbags & not being able to lower my standards! TPF has already turned me into somewhat of a handbag connoisseur even though I haven't been a member for very long! Once you have a bag that is of such good quality, durabilty, beauty & craftmanship, going to something less is rather dissapointing, even if you need a lesser bag to carry on vacation or something, I just feel like I walk taller knowing I have a really nice bag on my arm. I like to joke & say that "I have caviar taste on a tunafish budget!" :D

My mom had these amazing beaded evening bags that were her grandma's from the early 1900's and a black Lucite purse in the 60's that I loved looking at. My obsession began when I was in 2nd grade. I had a little girl purse, blue corduroy with a rainbow, that one of my friends really wanted to trade. I didn't trade. It went on to the white purse for 1st communion. In 6th grade the Pappagallo purses, the handles with covers that buttoned on, were super popular. My mom sewed me tons of covers. The designer bug hit me the first time I saw the Brooke Shields ad “nothing comes between me and my Calvins”. I was 13 and begged for Calvin Kline jeans for my birthday, which I got. I had a Liz Claiborne bag and tons of no name bags all through high school. My first designer bag was a Gucci bag my senior year. A week after I bought it, I got a speeding ticket and had to return the bag to pay my fine. I eventually got another Gucci. For years I could not afford the bags I dreamed of, but I still had a handbag obsession. I really don't go crazy buying bags, but I still love them. I told my family that at my funeral I want my bags to be displayed with a sign that says "These are a few of my favorite things."

It started with my first LV a year ago. At that time, I thought one designer purse was enough for me (*so naive*:nogood:). Now a year later, my collection is growing and I really don't see the end of my addiction. :sweatdrop:

^ Ah yes, I also said that I aspire to own an LV (my "Holy Grail bag at the time) & then I would be satisfied with my bag collection! "Naive" is the perfect description! After my LV I'm still obsessing & still craving more & more!

Even as a little kid I loved to collect things. I started out collecting rocks, stickers, stamps, coins, Breyer horses (I was & still am a horse nut), then jewelry, now I collect diamonds, & fancy colored diamonds (I can for the most part, only afford the irradiated or heated ones right now because of my latest obsession), clothes, shoes & most recently; handbags. Thanks to TPF, I am more enthused than ever to grow my collection & chat with like minded friends! :smile1:

Hi Everyone!!!

I tried to search for a thread about this but no luck... but I was pretty sure I saw one. Well anyways I'm just wondering what made you first decide to buy designer bags?

My story:

A long time ago... when I was 12 or 13 I was in the grocery store with my mom (I'm 21 now and in law school). I was waiting in the checkout lane and I began to flip through the magazines. SUDDENLY I saw THE BAG... the bag that now haunts my memories and my dreams. It was a Gucci... designed by Tom Ford with the twin dragons on a purple bag done in the gucci canvas and leather. At the time it was $500? $800? I don't remember, but it was definitely under $1000. I remember thinking the bag was gorgeous but I couldn't imagine someone paying so much for it... Flash forward to age 19. I bought my first Ferragamo. Before then I had dabbled in Coach and Juicy but had yet to buy a REAL designer bag.

Of course now that Ferragamo has many many friends from both ferragamo, and Dolce. I have a few other brands mixed in like Badgley Mischka, Gucci, Dior, Cole Haan, etc. I am still looking for that one Gucci bag that made all the difference. I have found it on ebay but it was selling for $2000... which is a bit steep for right now since I am determined to be independent and no longer allow my parents to pay my credit cards. *sigh* One Day......

I do not know what started it but I have always liked carrying handbags. My first designer was a Coach I got at an outlet store in Florida. I knew what style I liked and was anxious to get it. I have since sold it but from then on, I have gone bag crazy. I just love handbags.
