For as long as I can remember I've loved bags. I remember when I was 5 or 6 my grandmother crocheted me a little handbag to keep my trinkets in. I carried bags to school in grade school even though none of the other girls did.
In my teens I made a few bags myself, and that gave me an appreciation for how difficult it really is to make a bag! There were a couple I remember from heavy leather that I painted with flowers...so cheesy, but hey, it was the 70's.
Through my 20s I couldn't spend a lot on bags, but I would go shopping for the "perfect" bag for a certain need. I invested a lot of time in finding the perfect backpack for school, the perfect handbag for my first job, etc. Some of my concerns were security because I am a heavy public transit rider and not all backpacks or bags are secure when standing in a crowd.
In my 30's I got into bespoke bags from local designers. I still have two of the bags that were custom designed for me, even though I don't use them much anymore. They're just beautiful, soft napa bags and I remember talking to the designers about what I wanted.
In my 40s I found tPF and developed a love for Hermes scarves. I don't care much for the styles of Hermes bags, but going into the boutique every week made me interested in quality handbags again. I have picked up a few Bottega Veneta bags -- IMO the quality is near-equal to Hermes.
I love to window shop, and I can delay the gratification of a purchase for a long time. My collection is small (about 6 bags and 3 high end clutches) but I enjoy and use almost every bag I have.
My mother loves all things designer, though her working-class immigrant background doesn't allow her to spend four figures on one bag. I bought her a gorgeous bespoke bag about 10 years ago that she still carries, and one of my sisters treated her to a Coach bag in the $500 range recently. She loves labels and shopping, and I suppose some of that rubbed off on me. When I was a child she used to drag me on these marathon shopping trips...I mean, 10 hours of shopping for a child of 7. I'm sure I was a brat in the stores, too. What was she thinking?
I have a couple of nieces in their 20s who love designer handbags, and I'll probably treat them to something special when they come to visit me for Thanksgiving. I already got each of them a BV bracelet to give them.
