What have you learned through your handbag addiction?

I've learned to only buy bags that I will use i.e. there's no point in buying another handbag in a colour/shape I already have. If I buy bags now I make sure I don't have anything similar to it i.e. I bought my Chanel 2.55 because I know I don't own any bags I can use for evening occasions/nights out.

I discovered my handbag obsession never fails to coincide with that "time of the month":pout::drool::hysteric::drool: but I won't buy during this period (no pun intended!) just lots of window shopping.

I learned patience when it comes to getting the bag I want. I made rash choices at times when money was available but my bag wasn't. It usually follows that once I spent that money, my dream bag appears magically, and almost always on sale. ouch. I was more methodical and patient this year and was paid off with a pristine MJ Stam for 50% off.

Also pre-owned can sometimes mean used once or twice or not at all. You have to do your own sleuthing to find out how many owners and how long it was owned. This is a bit easy to do especially when sleuthing on eBay. I'm proud to say I'm a bit of an amateur detective!

I believe most credit card holders have a choice of mid-month or end-of-month statements. Find out which billing cycle is better for you in terms of spending on a handbag/s. And then pay it up in full each month. It gives you the rest of the cycle to plot your next purchase :D

I have learned that I could be patient and do extensive research on bags before I actually purchase it. I also learned that I could buy just 2 bags per year and not per want.

I have learned that I can't go back to bags with lower quality. I now notice every croaked stitch, un-centered grommet, or uneven proportioning on a bag, and it makes me a very picky shopper.

I've learned to only buy a bag that I will love and use now and in the future.I dont want to just buy a bag because its whats hot at the moment!! I buy what I love now instead of what the "It" bag is.

I've also figured out that Shoulder bags work best with my lifestyle, so satchels, and crossbody bags are not options when I shop for bags!! It has taken me awhile, but now it has saved me money.I dont have to go through 5 bags to find out I love a completely different style.:p

Hmmm, I've learned...

1. I like variety and I have a very specific vision of it. I like to have a variety of colors and shapes so I can pull something out to suit the look and the mood. I don't like the feeling of not having a base covered. Yet at the same time, I'm not really interested in anything that doesn't suit my personal style. Thank god for the wallet I'm not into the whole high fashion, polished look.

2. Reacquainting yourself with a bag is just as good as getting a new one, so I'll store bags and wait til I feel like using them again, which usually happens since I'm less about the particular bag as the shape and color.

3. That a person can be addicted to almost anything to fill a hole in your life (slow career progress for me), even if it's obvious that the addiction won't solve the root cause of the problem. I remind myself that I still have my feet on the ground and am not getting into debt or valuing material things over my relationships. In a weird way, it is comforting to know that you are building up a collection of sorts and that it'll be around for years. It's at least not like an addiction to substances, where you consume it and it's gone up in smoke. PtF is such a weird potent combo of enabling and shining a light on the addiction.

4. Just how commerce oriented our society is. I appreciate handbags like the next girl, but it's still pretty strange to me that we can talk about holy grails and the quality of bags as if it matters ultimately.

5. Just how rich the truly rich are.

Good post

When I joined TPF, I went crazy with all the mod shots of (new) designs posted up by the members here. I was uncontrollable at one time and bought the most bags during my entire lifetime in the past few years I spend here in TPF. Then through trial and errors, in and out of jobs/lifestyle, I've learnt :

Marketing gimmicks to entice consumers to spend more...and more...and more...
The vicious cycle of consumerism is never ending.
Bags are getting more expensive but made with less TLC, companies are all plunging in for $$$$ minus the quality.
That now I have gone passed the phrase of frenzy obsession and mellowed down
I once wanted a bag from every brand!!! But now I've decided to go for quality as opposed to quantity.
Even now I owned good quality bags but I don't even use them!!?? Nonetheless I shall still keep them and remind myself that I already have the best, forget the rest. Also I try to stick to minimalism so as to protect the environment. Same goes for my clothes - less but more well made and classic pieces.
