What have you learned through your handbag addiction?

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate
links, including eBay, Amazon, and others

- Don't buy bags on credit - if I don't have the money in hand to buy it, I don't need it
- Know thyself - just because it works for someone else doesn't mean that it will work for me
- If it's not comfortable/practical to carry, forget about it
- Designers at all price points can produce fantastic (as well as hideous) bags, both in terms of aesthetics and/or construction
- "It" bag trends are often fleeting
- A small collection is all that I personally require
- Poor customer service is inexcusable
- Impulse buying is almost always a mistake
- Never settle - be patient and wait for what you really want
- Sometimes it's an excellent idea to take a break from tPF!
- While I love love LOVE handbags, there are infinitely more important things in life.

ETA: - Why pay retail? Do your homework and you can almost always avoid it. ;)

I think sometimes too many bags can be a stand-in/substitution for other issues in one's life (like too much food, too much alcohol, too much sex ((is that possible?)) but sometimes they are just bags. And they are pretty and they make us feel nice. And that's okay, too.

i have learned that my lifestyle is way too casual for certain kinds of bags and that i shouldn't get all caught up in the hype of chasing bags just bc of their hierarchy. i have also learned to listen to myself more than to base my decisions on what others think i need rather than what i want and know i need ;) lastly, i have learned to stick with classics....bc you really can't go wrong when you do!

Me too! I just let go of my Chanels, which was hard to do, but with two kids, four cats, a dog and living where it rains constantly I was more neurotic about those bags than I should be. Plus, the amount I spent to get them could be better used in my life. My lifestyle didn't magically become one of lucury just because I loaded up on Chanel.

It's a hard lesson to learn.

I have learned about myself. I have really learned my own personal style. What I like and don't like. I have learned to please me and not others so much-who cares what someone else thinks of my bag? I have learned to not be compulsive when buying a bag or anything because it will end up returned or sold. Lastly, i have learned how to communicate with DH better. I have had to get him to see eye to eye on my love of handbags, and I have listened to him as why he doesn't understand it. Really all in all my love of handbags has done wonders for me.

Yay for you!!! I do find that when I have a life, I obsess about bags less. My spending season is tax season. I'm a CPA, so for three months of the year I have no life, so whatever free time I have is spent on bag shopping. Bags are easy, because I can do it online and don't have to worry about fit. And then every year around this time I wake up out of my haze, take a gander at the bank account and go WTF??!!!

I can SO relate to this. I came home with two yesterday (fully intending to return one after I got a second opinion). I've been really stressed out lately, and after my reveal, DH said "Are you pain shopping?"

I've learned that happiness doesn't depend on material possessions. If I lost all of my handbags I wouldn't be any less happy than I am now. Also, it's taught me to watch less TV and to value my retirement fund above all else.

Exactly. I want to add on that no matter how many bags you have, if you are trying to fill some sort of void...it will never work.

Yes! Why do I need a super fancy bag when i'm a jeans/tee kind of girl?

It is so much easier and enjoyable for me to buy a bag than a pair of shoes!!!! Bags fit and with my slim heels every pair of shoes slips off so it's bag shopping for me!
