What bag has best resale value?

I'm grateful for this post. Signs point to Chanel, Berkin, Balenciago, and LV. Thank you for your comments about your experiences. This influences me greatly in my next handbag purchase.

I would have to say Chanel holds their value the most. LV holds value when its a common bag that every one has like the Speedy or Neverfull or that is the hot LV bag...ie...the Artsy right now. I am a avid bag lover and never got into LV until recently for the resale value reason.
I have 4 Marc Jacobs right now that I don't use and I can't get half of what the were worth. I mean really...if I got a bag when it was $1500, there is no way I am going to sell it for 400 or 500...
Balenciaga bags, are touchy. Black or hard to find colors hold their value most, even though I feel they also are starting to go down in value.
I haven't had any luck selling my Bottegas or my Valentinos at a decent price.

Why do you say that Marc Jacobs have a poor resale value, have you experience of it, just wondering what the reasons are? Is it because they are not "classics"?

I do have experience selling MJ. I have owned Venetias, and Stellas, a few hoboss and a Jen. I never made more than 50% of retail when I sold them. And I don't know why. MJ bags have lovely leather and are well made. I don't think the market is saturated. It's just a brand that isn't as popular as others I guess.

It's interesting to note that when you look at the sign in page for tPF, where it shows how many people are viewing the different subforums, the "bestsellers"(chanel, lv hermes) have 300-400 viewers, whle the other subforums have considerable less viewers. It's all about the numbers, I guess.

This is true. I've found that a LV might retain 50-75% of its value. I've not bought Chanel and Hermes so I cannot comment.

I have to disagree about Balenciaga -- I've had a few Bbags and didn't sell them for as much as I had thought I would. I had one last year that was an older bag in a popular (HTF) color and I ended up selling it for $200-300 less than what I had thought it would go for -- once I forked over ebay/paypal fees, it was even less

MJ bags are horrible resellers lately -- I remember when you couldn't find a stam for less than $600, now you're lucky if you make that much. Forget about the "classics", i.e., the venetia, stella, MP -- if you make more than $200 you're on the high end!! There are a handful of styles/colors that are still in high demand (anything from the Sweet Punk line), but even those are under selling compared to a few yrs ago. Even current season, NWT MJ bags are a hard sell!!

Lanvin is a good reseller -- those seem to hold their value, Celine bags are very popular right now and you could break even or loose very little -- and Proenza Schouler, PS1 bags
