This is such a fun thread!
I started collecting in my early 20's also.
Would you like to hear what I still wear I a weekly basis @ 50?

1. Pearl stud earrings
2. White gold hoops-quarter size
3. Stainless steel tank watch
4. Engagement/wedding set
5. White gold box chain with key charm.

The rest comes out rarely. Pick what you LOVE and you'll still be wearing it years later.

I personally would have put the money away for now (turning 30 in January), as I finally know a bit more about myself, my taste, the things I like and who I want to be and be perceived as in the future :)

When I was in my 20s I was after (in no particular order):

1. Diamond tennis bracelet in platinum (settled for a cz one in platinum plate at 22, but eventually got a gorgeous two tone 18kt gold one while on vacation in HI at 25)

2. Stainless bracelet watch

3. Diamond studs (princess cut)

4. Tahitian pearl strand, dark with bright overtones (went baroque)

5. Something from the 1920s

This is great! It's so nice to hear what people purchased early on that they are still enjoying and using.

I'm 23 and am working on building a collection that I will continue to enjoy wearing later in life. Here's whats on my list.

1.) Cartier Love bracelet
2.) Pearl studs
3.) diamond studs
4.) VCA alhambra necklace
5.) Diamond bangle/ tennis bracelet

So far I have 1, 2, and 3 and I should have #4 by January if VCA can hold of on their next price increase.

Currently in my 20's and I am very content with my everyday "essential" jewellery.

1. 5 ct diamond tennis bracelet - I got this when I was 17 and I wear it every day.

2. 0.5 ct princess cut diamond stud earrings.

3. Chopard Happy Diamond necklace - also wear this everyday since I got it at 18.

4. White gold bracelet - it looks like lots of mini disco balls joined together.

5. Chanel J12 watch.

6. Hermés bangles to stack

7. I'm not engaged but I do have a diamond and ruby ring I always wear on my right hand. I wouldn't say this is essential but it's become something I wear all the time now.

I'm in my 40s, but if I had to do it all over, I would choose this.

1. diamond studs - save up for an upgradable set, high quality in platinum
2. classic necklace - probably would choose Cartier or a solitaire set in a bezel
3. Cartier love bracelet
4. yellow gold statement ring - something from Tiffany or Cartier
5. a classic Rolex, no diamonds

The e-ring doesn't count cause that is from your fiance. I assume this is if you were buying for yourself.

I didn't have much disposable income in my 20's so my list is going to be more on the starter side as I don't think the average 20 something can afford things like a Cartier Love Bracelet (unless they put it on a credit card (thus debt) or save up little by little each month (which takes discipline and will require time with starting salaries in mind) so with that, here's my list:

1) White freshwater pearl stud earrings (classic, simple, and you can likely get a very nice pair under $100)
2) Right hand ring (Lots of options under a $500 price point in 14k gold or silver)
3) Diamond solitaire necklace (Can do something very simple like a DBTY - keep it below .25 for a starter size)
4) Everyday watch (Lots of good options under $500 re Bulova, Citizen)
5) Diamond stud earrings (keep at .25-.50 for a starter pair)

ETA - If I could add a 6th item, it would be a necklace that's distinctly "you" (I notice necklaces on other women more than anything else) - for example, a Tiffany Key necklace (lots of options in silver under $500), any of Elsa Peretti's, i.e., bean, open heart, starfish, etc. (in either gold or silver), etc.
