What 5 jewelry pieces should a girl in her 20s focus on acquiring?

1. Diamond studs - they're so classic, and they can be dressed up or down. I actually was on the fence about getting mine, and I'm sooo glad that I did, because I literally wear them all of the time.
2. Some sort of diamond pendant - mine is a diamond solitaire, and I wear it almost every day
3. Pearl necklace - great for dressy occasions, and also for job interviews
4. A nice watch
5. A ring - either gemstone or diamonds

I would like to point out that most any jewelry store will allow you to "trade up" on diamond stud earrings... I'm on pair #4 since 2003 buying from 3 different stores in 3 different cities. No need to start over when upgrading...

I think it sounds like you have a gorgeous collection - no offence to anyone on here but I don't think a lot of the suggestions are very realistic for the average person in their 20s to afford - what 20 year old has thousands to spend on jewellery - as a college student and for a good few years after I couldn't have dreamt of owning a Love bracelet 1 ct+ diamond studs, diamond tennis bracelets or half the other stuff mentioned!

I felt the same way when I read through many of the suggestions for all the diamond pieces. I only listed pieces that I felt a working girl in her 20's making a modest income could reasonably acquire (pearls, gold earrings, a nice watch, small sapphire earrings). Tennis bracelets, diamond stud earrings, diamond pendants, those are not things I would peg a girl in her early 20's to wear through her own hand, as a gift from her parents or if she were married but this OP appeared to sound single to me so I put up suggestions for the single woman in her 20's. Kudos to those that accumulated such goodies in their early 20's but the average girl in her 20's is just starting out on a modest income. The OP and others like her are reading these suggestions for diamonds and possibly feeling like they are so far behind or can't measure up.

OP it sounds like you have a fine collection, you didn't do it backwards and there's no rush in getting it all now. You're so young and you have a lifetime to accumulate the just right collection. I think going to work with too many diamonds could be setting the wrong tone, it could be off putting for some people, I would hold back in that environment. As for making these purchases, I find that antique/pawn/second hand dealers have the best to choose from, the pieces were often made better longer ago. I have a pearl strand that I inherited and the jeweler I took it to restring it said to me that they don't make pearls like that anymore. The other strands I got I made sure to get second hand for the thicker nacre. If you are open to getting jewelery second hand it really opens up a lot more possibilities.

I agree!!!! A lot of my jewelry is second hand...The best deal I got was a Chanel J12 with a rubber strap...they don't make J12s anymore with a rubber strap. I got it from a vintage shop for $1000! I researched and found that at the time, J12s with a rubber strap retailed for $3700. It's a significant savings.

I agree with the viewpoints on some of the recommendations, since myself as a single girl making a 6 figure salary in my 20s would still not purchase some of these things, lol.

that being said, here is my list of staples:

1. a nice watch, preferably a secondhand cartier or rolex. mine: http://www.cartier.us/#/show-me/timepieces/w51007q4-tank-française-watch-small-model
2. diamond tennis bracelet in the style that you love, also secondhand
3. Everyday necklace (mine is a dainty sarah perlis pink sapphire necklace) http://www.sarahperlis.com/collections/necklaces/products/disk-and-bezel-charm-necklace
4. right hand ring: http://hgfinejewelry.com/products-page/shop/18k-diamond-bezel-rings
5. diamond stud earrings

This is OT but I feel like this thread needs to be read by every college female across the world.

I can't handle when people load on the gunky claire's jewelry, more of something cheaply made doesn't make it look anymore expensive.

I am Currently in my early twenties and this is my choice so far,

Everyday pearl necklace, formal pearl necklace, nice watch, cute everyday semi precious stone pendant, with pandora bracelet.

I love pearls, and coloured stones. I find them fits very easy to match with my daily outfits, such as tees , shorts and cardi.

As a 21 year old woman (almost 22!) I would aim for these pieces:

1. Diamond or pearl studs whichever suit your lifestyle and style choices more
2. Everyday diamond and/or pearl necklace to go with #1
3. Nice watch (doesn't have to be expensive), only recently have I understood the importance of a good watch
4. Some fun stackable bracelets to pile on
5. Fun earrings that add color or interest to an outfit on days you don't want to wear #1

I'm in my mid 20's, married, and NOT making a combined income over 6 figures. Even though I don't have a huge amount of disposable income to spend on jewelry (like none, since we're spending our money on other investments at the moment), I think what other posters have said about saving for quality pieces is right on the mark! For a girl on a budget these are the things I think are perfectly attainable if you save for them over a period of time and will make a strong impression during a time when so many of us are working on building our careers.
1. Simple pair of studs or huggie hoops in quality metal- I would LOVE a pair of diamond studs but I think my tiffany silver bead studs, tiffany teardrop earrings and white gold huggies get the job done for now. I also have some freshwater pearl studs for when the occasion presents itself but I rarely reach for pearls. For me personally, I would rather wait till I can afford the diamond studs in the quality/ size I really want and wear other nice but less pricey pieces till then.
2. Nice quality stackable bracelets- I've been wearing my tiffany silver bead bracelet and tiffany Venetianan link together and I feel like it's a fun yet professional/ grown up look. I adore the Blue Nile diamond bar bracelets some of you ladies have been sporting. I think it's fresh and young but still beautiful and timeless so you won't be tired of it in a few years. Since it'll be a while till I can afford a TB, I think it's a good compromise - and it looks great stacked with other pieces or on its own for a more formal event. I'm seriously lusting for one!
3. My goal acquisition is a fixed, bezel set, diamond necklace (DBTY style but without the Mickey ears and the tiff mark up) in 1/4 or 1/3 ct with an excellent cut diamond. I think it's a perfect style for any age and is something that I can afford if I save up for it slowly. It's also a nice style for a young person because (I think) the style calls for smaller, daintier diamonds, so it looks purposefully small- not like you just couldn't afford something bigger.
4. Quality ring- I wear my e-ring and wedding band, but if I were single I would invest in some stackable RH rings in WG or YG or RG- maybe one pave, one bezel and one solid metal? I think this is a fun way to mix metals and create different looks.
5. I would love a pair of diamond earring jackets. I would get them to fit the size or diamond that I one day wish to have (for me, 1/2 ct per ear) and then get nice freshwater pearls, sapphires, or your favorite gemstone to fit for the time being. It's a versatile way to get more mileage from your collection and I love the halo look.

I'm in my mid 20's and I'm just starting to build my jewelry collection I told hubby my wish list to acquire before 30 (in the next 5 years)

1)love bangle in YG (no diamonds) I'm getting one this summer it's my first "major" jewelry purchase besides my e-ring:)

2) Cartier roadster watch

3) 1.5 tcw diamond studs

I also LOVE ippolita bangles

When I'm older:

1) a cocktail ring with aquamarine (the Tiffany legacy ring with an aquamarine is stunning!!!)

2.) a cocktail watch- black strap dainty with diamonds around the face

3) tennis bravelet

4) VCA alahmbra necklace/bracelet set

I forgot about jackets! These are something I'd love to acquire before I'm 30.:graucho:
