Water/StainProofing Exotics

So I've read every page of two threads about care for exotic CLs and I still have some questions. For my birthday I got 3 new pairs: pink watersnake Altadama, red eelskin Ron Ron, and dark grey eelskin Lady Peep (I think is the style). Anyway, most of the posts in the threads about exotic care talked mainly about water and stain repellant, but I saw a few posts about conditioner as well. Should I be using both? On both watersnake and eelskin? How often?

Also, I had a cobbler tell me that the Meltonian Water & Stain Protector was discontinued (though it seems to still be available online). That's what I've seen recommended more than anything. Does anyone know if that's true? He also told me that the Kiwi and Meltonian are the same brand and Kiwi's protector is exactly the same formulation as Meltonian's. Does anyone have experience with Kiwi products?

The eel skin is a lot more delicate than most people would expect. I have seen eel skins with molds, stained, and mummmified beyond recognition, therefore I would perhaps refrain applying conditioner and just stick with water repellent. The pink ws has the sueded nubuck finish, correct? I have a pair of Jennys in the same material, which I just apply stain/rain repellent (Apple Garde) periodically and it seems to be working for me. HTH!

The watersnake is the grenadine? Kinda like a nubuck leather? And you're talking about the lotion type of conditioner from Meltonian?

^If yes, then no, you should NOT be using the conditioner on this kind of watersnake or suede. I've posted pix to demonstrate how the lotion can remove the color and mess up the texture in Ntngo's thread.

The lotion is only for patent or smooth leather (I only use it for insole cleaning). Exotics are fine as well but they can't be in a suede-ish kind of texture. So your smooth eelskins should have no probs. Personally, I don't think brand new shoes need conditioning. I just spray with Meltonian's spray, which are not discontinued, but rather re-packaged in the blue container. Then it really depends on how much you wear the shoes. If you wear them daily, maybe give it a good conditioning every month. If just once in a while, you only need to do so every 6-12 months.

The conditioning cream: I use this as well, but only on smooth leathers. I prefer this over the lotion, see note below.

Note: The lotion will YELLOW some leathers... Use sparingly or else some parts, especially areas with glue will darken or you'll get weird yellow patches on your leather. I've had my Jimmy Choo Elaphe snakeskin shoes messed up cuz I used too much in the beginning...

Just to add, I would NOT be using the conditioner (either the lotion or cream) concurrently with the spray... My gut feeling just tells me no... It's kinda like when I apply make-up, once I have everything set with liquid or cream foundation, why would a spray my face with some setting-spray? I know MAC has this spray that people rave about, but I think it's weird... It's fine to mist your face later on in the day, but right after you put on foundation??? No... lol Sorry to go off tangent...

Thanks for your advice CEC.LV4eva! My shoes are the softer, suede-ish texture snakeskin. So could I just use the meltonian spray to protect them? I'm so paranoid about them getting wet/dirty!
