Because of all these horror stories I read in this forum, I asked a few international buyers for bank wire payment for items over a $1000 and they all backed down. It scares buyers, because ebay keeps sending discouraging messages to buyers to refuse doing business, if a seller askes for money transfer or checks as payments..
Buyers think this is a red flag. I don't know how as a seller we can promote getting paid through bank transfers and seem legit. :shrugs:

I have lost so much business because of this in bolded or wire.
I have had a ton of success to but it's sad that those that back down because they worry (due to ebay) making them think if the seller asks for payment other than paypal it is a red flag! Makes me so friggin upset that ebay has that type of manipulation. A lot of sellers are amazing and should be treated as such! I won't do paypal at all and didn't realize you can't have a MO in your auctions. ARHG!:censor::rant::mad::pout::rtr:

The reason WU or wire transfer raise red flags is not because it's not paypal. It's because those are payment options that offer no protection to the buyer.

You don't have to accept paypal. There are other payment options that ebay allows and will give the buyer protection.

Our Accepted Payments policy helps ensure that buyers and sellers on eBay are offered safe, convenient payment options.
For most categories, sellers need to offer one or more of the following electronic payment choices:

  • PayPal
  • ProPay
  • Moneybookers
  • Paymate
  • Credit card or debit card processed through the seller's Internet merchant account

That wasn't my reasoning, I am referring to those that had no problems (using a MO or other means of payment) before ebay changed their rules. It has to do with what I mentioned whereas ebay makes one think that unless you use paypal you should fear for your life. Ebay wants the money and wants those to feel iffy when in fact there are many ways to pay.

That's fine with the above
I'm sure ebay is getting a cut
if not there are many safe ways other than those mentioned
but if ebay isn't making money they want the buyer to feel uneasy

And you're going to tell me that paypal offers safe protection:laugh:
sorry NOT!

I would consider it a red flag if a seller doesn't accept PayPal and would never send a money order. As a buyer I want to use PayPal because I want protection in cases of SNAD or an item not described. Yes, I know I can do a chargeback if I pay through a merchant check out but it's not quite the same. When dealing with Ebay I want the best protection possible and that's going to be by using PayPal.

But how do you feel about it as a seller----knowing that PP will help scamming buyers steal your item and your money and leave you no recourse after running you around for weeks? Hmmmmm??????

I do accept paypal as a seller, but the message I was responding to was in relation to buyers seeing a red flag if a seller doesn't accept paypal. As a BUYER I don't want to get scammed or stuck with a SNAD item. Get it - hmm? As a BUYER I want the best protection and that is from paypal, I've been sent a snad item before and wouldn't want to bet my luck on getting my money refunded using another method. Are you suggesting buyers dont look after themselves so that sellers can feel safer? It works both ways.

Well that's you and your opinion Linda. I'll disagree with you :p but certainly you're welcomed to what you feel is safe or not. I take into account each individual, so if someone has a history of selling $$$$ bags and only takes MO or wire, I'm fine with that and would feel safe. Now if someone is a new seller with no feedback, & will only take a MO, of course red flags would appear.
It's using a lot of common sense. I have seen too many incidents where paypal was far from safe. I would rather have more control on my auctions and using paypal doesn't cut it for me. I have sold enough $$$$ bags for a buyer to see that. What I decide as far as payment, saves me from those that are trying to scam. They aren't going to waste their time. My buyers have had no issues using other forms of payment.

Again everything I said is an opinion and I do believe I am probably close to alone in my thinking. Your opinion is the more popular one I would assume.

Again, as a SELLER do you feel safe accepting PP with the same devotion you do as a buyer?

I buy and sell and I don't trust PP either way.

I had a phishing email from paypall and I forwarded it to spoof. When I called them I got the run around to three different departments, none of whom knew what the other was doing/had done.

I just don't understand how anyone who says they sell can so vigorously defend a company that would screw them over in a New York nanosecond....whether responding to a discussion about BUYERS or not. Get it?

As a buyer and seller both (on bonanza and ebay) I always hold my breath until the end of a transaction, I want my buyer to be happy and when I purchase something I want it to come as described as well. So I would say I feel equally vulnerable buying and selling on Ebay but still choose to do both. As a seller I prefer PayPal, it's easy and I like how I can go in and generate my label and all my tracking info is kept right there. I pay my fees out of the balance and deposit the rest in my account.

It has nothing to do with 'defending' PayPal, in fact I hope the OP does take PayPal to court over this and WINS. What I vigorously defend is that when I am buying in Ebay I will use the method that offers me the best protection and at this time that's PayPal.

Linda I understand your concerns an respect them, but we have many treads here even from buyers who lost money because of Paypal strange measures of protection. Buyers have been hung to dry by Paypal as well as sellers.
I don't want to get in to details too much cause it's a long story,( and I will answer any direct questions cause I'm not exagerating it), before I start selling too, I bought a few things on ebay through Paypal that said Paypal protection in the listing. I got ripped off big time cause their buyer protection is also a sham.
If the seller withdraw the money and never send the item, this is what you will hear from paypal; "well seller's account is empty and we will try to recover your money by forcing her to refund you. The case still shows open in my paypal account and is a joke.
I assure you, even as a buyer, you are not 100% protected through paypal :wtf:

No worries! :smile1: That's just it, we all have to go with what we feel most comfortable with when dealing with Ebay. As a buyer for me that's PayPal, the downside is that it may mean I pass over some items I would otherwise purchase if I could use PayPal. As a seller, if you don't want to accept PayPal the downside is that you will miss out on some buyers. It works both ways and I definitely think we should all go with what we feel comfortable with.

So much hostility on this board when what we want is the same thing as both buyers and sellers, to have a smooth pleasant transaction.

I can remember many of those threads, I think it has gotten better now with buyer protection, they will refund you and then go after the seller to recover the funds. I'm not entirely sure on that though, I hope so. Thanks for chiming in! :flowers:
