With a little bit of magic, I was able to put all the stuff I normally carry in my new to me Carnival bag 9925. Had to trade my red Coach trifold wallet (seen in my first comp post) to a slim wallet. Here it is in comparison to a Legacy Trail 9965 and Watson 9981. Lots more room in the trail bag. My Iphone is a Plus. So more space if you have a regular sized phone.

What an excellent idea, @Nataluccia3 !

Do you think there would be a benefit to compiling a list for dog clip and lobster claw straps as well?
Definitely. I think this could get pretty big though. A lot of them have adjustable buckles as well, so we’d need to standardize measurements taken at, for example, the longest length possible.

I’m also curious to see how much variation we have in lengths between different plants and years. If it’s an inch or so, that could be due to stretching. But much more than that could add a whole new layer of data collection. If we only had an easier way to compile it so it’s not just in text...

@Hyacinth do you know of an easier way to compile strap variations in tPF? If we’re looking to assemble some sort of fluid database, how is the best way to do it in this platform? Feel free to invite anyone else who may know a good way as well!

I'm loving the look of that Watson!

I'd seen it before, but thought it was more of a mini bag. Thanks so much for the visuals, @Yrelle!

I only have one vintage detachable strap so far, but I'm happy to start the list:

Totally agree. I always thought the Watson was tiny!

What helps me visualize and have a good sense of size is when I see it with a bag I already own.

Oh and that Legacy trail can be added to the list of 1” strap. It is 46 inches long.

I don’t know if you also want info on the non riveted straps? Not as popular, but I believe the strap on my Classic Hobo and Pocket bag are the same. Can check shortly.

Sorry, you're asking someone who has never even used any sort of word or data processing program. I couldn't recognise a spreadsheet if my life depended on it. Others here should have some useful suggestions.

Remember too, there are going to be known and unknown variations in straps. Most of us know that pre-1990 bags attached with clips were available in 2 different lengths, but sometimes you'll find an oddball that isn't in the books. My NYC Rambler is shown in every catalog I've found as having a 43-inch long strap, but my 1986 or 1987 Rambler's strap is almost exactly 48 inches end to end. I don't know how or why, but I'm glad it is because it might be the only original Rambler in existence with a strap long enough for me to comfortably wear cross-body.

And always watch for straps that have been shortened!

BTW, you might want to include these in that thread, from Coach's Fall 1983 catalog. If I find any more pages on their optional straps I'll post them here too.

ETA - And although it's not about straps, this background information from 1982 does mention the solid brass buckles, and makes interesting reading too:

The problem with removable straps is that you never know if the strap you have was original to the bag. You can use any removable strap with any bag that has a place to attach them. Coach allowed people to substitute straps when they bought bags.

Completely agree, which is why I was wondering if this is even a good idea to assemble. It’s not very reliable... Maybe we could just compile widths of buckles? Those wouldn’t change. Then people could get an idea of what bag to use when shopping for strap swappable options. Can always ask the seller to measure what comes with the bag. What do you all think?

You are right, the length might not be reliable but the width will still work and knowing what bags share the same width strap.
