Can someone please help me narrow a date for this slim satchel? Glued on number, trademarked Coach. 70s? 80s? What do you think? The tag is, of course, brand new![]()
The glued-in serial number/trademarked Coach creeds were used from the early 1970s to sometime in the mid- to late 1970s, according to this Guide:

For what it's worth, I'll second this opinion. As for when the original form ###-#### ident system was first introduced, I suspect that it occurred sometime either in the 1977 or 1978. I'm basing this on the fact that the earliest releases of the #9525 Stewardess bags, which I seem to recall was introduced in Spring of 1977, had a storypatch only with no ident numbers. These articles may have been fabricated in late 1976 (in advance of the intro), but given the small size of the then COACH NYC "factory," I cannot believe that building inventory was something that their production capacity or warehousing could support. And I too have seen bags with glued-in tags that had early 1980's documentation. Whether or not those were warehouse/inventory leftovers cannot be determined. I only wish I had catalogs and intro dates from that period to help narrow this issue down.I disagree with Debi on this. I believe the glued in serial numbers were used for about 4 years around the late 70s, early 80s....
I bought a couple of basic bags in 1983 that both had the glued in numbers. I remember the year because I started a new job in a new town. I bought them in the new town. The glued-in serial number/trademarked Coach creeds were used from the early 1970s to sometime in the mid- to late 1970s, according to this Guide:

lol! Did you see the seller's other stuff? I'm sure she didn't get permission to use any of those copyrighted images, like the LV shoes.

Did you see this bag she did as a custom order? https://www.etsy.com/listing/487539921/custom-listing-dumbo-coach-bag-for?show_sold_out_detail=1 Didn't Coach auction off one just like that?
I disagree with Debi on this. I believe the glued in serial numbers were used for about 4 years around the late 70s, early 80s. I've gotten bags with glued in serial numbers that came with paperwork that allowed me to date them from the early 80s, 1980-1983. I've never gotten one with paperwork from the 70s, so while I'll allow that they could have used it in the late 70s, I have no proof of that. I think they may have started using the glued in serial numbers when production increased so much that there was a bottleneck at the number stamper. So they made the creeds without a number and glued it in later. Coach didn't use the registered trademark symbol in the early 1970s. In fact, they didn't even use numbers in the early 1970s. Numbers weren't used until the mid to late 70s. Coach only used the registered trademark symbol on creeds for about 4 or 5 years at most, until Sara Lee acquired the company in 1985 and told them to stop using it, since they hadn't actually ever registered their trademark at that time.
