Small bags tend to not get used a lot. It isn't unusual to find them in great condition.

As promised, I post here my new Coach Madison Gracie bag arriving today. I feel like I got a treasure. It looks like a forgotten little beauty. Still in perfect condition, brand new, of course with a little bit sign of time.
Along with the bag are: long trap, care card, dustbag, and ... the most surprising part is a receipt stated the price, the time and the store location it were sold, an Italian city. ^^

I'm a newbie - how do you find out the name of a vintage bag prior to 1994? I found a Vintage New York City bag at a thrift shop and I am dying to know what it is officially called (if anything).

If I may answer, I've also ordered replacement hang tags from Coach, three times in the last year. (I think there's a limit). I've attached a picture of the bag to my requests.
So far all three of them have been different from the original hang tag, but pretty close in terms of colors harmonizing. I think it depends on what they have in stock. It's a great service!
I have also gone into the local Coach outlet twice in search of hang tags, and both times I've been graciously helped by the sales associates, who have been kind enough to go through their spare hang tag "stash" in the back room and have come up with some pretty good substitute hang tags for me. They've gone beyond the call of duty!
It's pretty hard to get a matching hang tag for the truly vintage bags, unless you stalk them on eBay. They do come up occasionally.

I asked at the boutique where I shop, and they brought out a giant bag and let take as many as I wanted. They had hundreds in the bag and were super helpful in helping find some that would work on a variety of bags that I have that are were missing hangtags. I probably took home 15 hangtags.
