Here is one of my latest finds on eBay. I came upon it by chance and did not ask for a second one. These are seldom found anywhere and this one shows no signs at all of wear. It is essentially in "new" condition. :-)

What is the story behind these bags? When and were they made? Was it for a presidential election? For fun? I have been just a few of these, they are gorgous! Congratulations!:) what a treasure!:$ how you you search for bags?! Thank you!!

My understanding is that the bags were made in or around 1972 and may have been gifts to the wives of the senators who accompanied President Nixon to China. The seal on the bags was stamped by the Federal Government, not Coach. It was a historic trip because it went a long way toward normalizing relations between our two countries. The story has not been confirmed, however. Also, the wording on the Coach bags is E Pluribus Unum - The many are one or many united. Today, the wording on the Great Seal (Federal Seal) is different. It is "In God We Trust." Thus, the seal on the handbags is no longer the official one. I would love to know how Coach pulled the whole deal off!

You are correct that they are very few and far between. I use many different searches depending on what I am looking for. In this instance, I just happened to come across this and purchased it right away to avoid a bidding war. Other than this one, I have seen only two others, both black, but they were made in some incredible colors - red, orange, yellow, brown and black (that I know of). I saw them in some photos of the Coach Archive. You might try searching Coach Vintage Bags or something similar. I have come across a few treasures using that search and some similar ones. You could also try searching the different decades with the understanding that many of the bags are incorrectly dated but once in awhile you may find a really cool one in the wrong decade. Mostly, though, it's hit or miss and I never seem to find a particular rare bag when I am specifically looking for it. I have to let go of my current obsession and go with what is out there.

I don't shop ebay often, but last week found a deal I couldn't pass up...Mid-70's, pre-serial number, early Dinky bag #9375 with eyelets, anchors, faceted hangtag chain and BEAD CHAIN imprint. BIN $25 and FREE shipping...YAY! Very good condition, a little ink, but no major issues!

It's so pretty and what a great find! I have a bag with the faceted bead chain, but have yet to get one with the cute little anchors.

It's so clean too!
