I wonder if anyone has seen vintage Coach with a Scovill zipper. I have two similar center seam duffles, both authenticated here. One has the regular Coach zipper with leather pull tag. The other has a Scovill Zipper with no leather pull. I have attached a photo. Ive done some research on here and apparently Scovill was an industrial strength zipper company that closed in the mid-70s.

The top zipper is from the bag I've had for years, the bottom from a bag I just purchased. The bag is authentic and in beautiful condition. If the zipper was a replacement, it was an expensive and well done repair. I don't mind if it was replaced. Just mostly curious.

I have squared off zippers in several NYC bags. I believe I posted on the AT thread . Coach probably had multiple sources for hardware.
Will see if I can find it and edit my post!

Edited, my bags have Wilse brand squared off zippers!

I've seen comments on TPF (I think) that early Coach bags show a variety of zippers. I'm operating on the assumption that the Scovill zipper is original, especially for the age of the bag. Thank you for the information, @Lake Effect. Did you ever get out to KOP?

I am thinking too, even an expertly replaced zipper may gives some small clues to that.
Not yet. I was going to let you know when I did, to compare notes!

This might be a silly question but is the first time I got a bag with the paper clip pull. I have done a search to look at other watermelon bags from the same time period, but none show a clear picture of how the leather is supposed to be.
Is it supposed to be together (by the stitches I think not), but just to be sure I am asking the experts. TIAIMG_6585.jpeg

It is supposed to be together. It may have originally been glued.

Hi everyone, I'm interested in the Willis bag, but I hesitate to buy one because it may be awkwardly large for my body shape, especially being that it's a square. I wish I could go try one on but no idea where I can find one in real life. I'm 5'4" 115 lbs.

1. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the size, especially if you have the Willis bag!

2. I'm interested in the dark gray with silver/nickel hardware. Anyone have a dark gray bag and do you find it easy or hard to match?

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

I’ve had 3 Willises in the past including grey with nickel.

It looks larger online than it actually is. I don’t think it’ll look disproportionate on you, it’s 10 inch by 10 inch.

The strap might be a bit too long depending on your anatomy. You can always swap it out for a guitar style novelty strap. Etsy & Amazon have a large selection or you can get one from Coach but they’re usually expensive.

The grey with nickel combo matches everything black does.

What are you planning to carry? Are you open to other bag suggestions?

This was relisted right after it sold at auction. I wonder what happened.

This is actually the third time it’s been re-listed. The first time it bid up to $610. Either something is wrong with it, buyers are canceling out of remorse or the seller isn’t getting the price they want for it

I'm 5'5" with just a few more pounds than you and the Willis is one of my favorite styles. I do have the gray with silver hardware and I find it easy to match however I like my bags to stand out so I often carry reds, purples, greens, or oranges (rust!! ) to keep my bags the highlight of my attire. That's just me though. And you'll most likely end up with more than one anyway, if you love them as much as many of us do.

The Willis does look larger in photos than it really is, as previously mentioned. If you're really worried about size, you might consider a Murphy. They're about 2/3 the size of a Willis but without the top handle. I think you would like a Willis though.

I have your gray with nickel Willis now. I LOVE IT. The last Willis I bought was aubergine and it needs to spend some time with Sue. I think I'm up to almost 20 Willises now. Willii? What's the plural for Willis? :P I'm kidding.
