The arrival of the Saddle Pouch sparked an interesting conversation in my house. My boyfriend started to fondle her and admired the thick soft leather and asked if I could think of a more masculine style that might work for him, and if I could please rehab an old Coach bag for him? I told him I'll ask my internet friends, so I ask you: Can you think of a style that would work for my man?
He never carries a briefcase, more like a smaller north-south man-bag. He has ruled out the Willis as it has a top-handle, and the Patti as too big. I think something like the #9168 (North-South Legacy Zip, if that's the actual name) might work, and he likes the #9817 that I don't know the name of, but I see it refered to as Camera Bag on Ebay. Does anybody have experience rehabbing this style? It has a plastic zipper and buckles stamped with Coach, like the Hippie Flap (if that's the name) #9142, assuming that what I saw on Ebay was authentic. Is this the same beautiful Coach leather my boyfriend fell in love with?
Other style options are greatly welcome! Thanks in advance.

What about the camera bag style #9973? Its very minimalist so it can be worn gender neutral and its more north-south in silhouette. Ive had it on my list of coach bags to keep an eye on for a while

eta: if he ruled out the willis because of the top handle, theres also the Murphy #9930

I was gonna say Willis because it's like a small briefcase and my hubby has two but if he doesn't want that I'm sure someone will have a great suggestion.

First of all, good job bring in a new Vintage Coach fan!
As to the bag for your BF, the first bag comes to my mind is Shelton style # 9917, it is North South, smaller than Willis, crossbody, with full lined front flap like saddle pouch, same thick glovetaned leather, rear outside pocket, front gasket pocket under the flap, made in around 1994, design is simple and sort of structured.

Love this! Though I can see us fighting over who gets to wear the Shelton, lol.

I think your lucky find is just called small shopping bag, I have a similar one but later version called small shopper, it has outside kisslock and stripped lining, but with black lines in the lining, yours is earlier, the strip lining has no black lines. I am include a link below of earlier coach photos, some one has an unbelievable collection of BC bags, you can find many styles and their names in her pages of postings..

I sold my legacy companion bag today. It was the very first vintage coach bag Id ever bought. Im kinda bittersweet about letting it go because I guess its “sentimental” to me being my first, but I also haven’t carried it once since getting it so I knew it needed to find a new home! Ive attached a picture- atleast now it will forever be on this thread lol8BEEB87C-5FEE-476F-BB78-1EF1272D185B.jpeg

How about a Shelburne Flap 9038? Below is a catalog page and a pic of a British Tan Shelburne that I rehabbed. It has a back slip pocket that is convenient.

Oh wow - that looks incredible!

I have another rookie question if you don't mind. I purchased some leather therapy and was probably a little heavy handed when using it on a BT bag. It seemed to really darken and enhance the scratches - they looked like pen parks after to give you an idea of the effect. I let it dry for 24 hours and no difference. I dunked it and will try to condition again when its almost dry but I'm reluctant to use the Leather Therapy. Also, I thought it was hard to know how much I was applying when using a damp sponge. Anyone have any tips? I'm considering switching to leather CPR - do you apply with a rag instead of a sponge? And can you use it liberally? Thanks for the tips!

Good strap too, love it.

Yes, a wide adjustable strap so that's nice.

I know the subject of those Mystery Blue colors is still a painful subject, but I just came across a few interesting photos that I saved back in 2014 and forgotten I had until today. I don't know if anyone has posted about this particular blue color recently when the subject was being discussed. Click on the thumbnails:

and last but not least

"RY" was saved to my color codes at least 10 years ago as "Royal Blue (Japan)"

So maybe another one of our mystery colors is accounted for, if it hasn't been already? And the "Japan" would also explain why the topstiched blue is so rare.

ETA - and here's a 2005 Willis with the same topstitching. No tags though:

This Bonnie Cashin tiny tote bag was kindly authenticated by Whateve in the AT thread, as a mid- to late-60s bag.(Thanks, Whateve!) does anyone happen to know the style name or number? Did Coach have catalogues in the 1960s? This is not a bag I would ever dunk, because the base is just plain cardboard wrapped in fabric; I just want to take care of it for its historic value to me. Is a Bonnie Cashin tag bag older than a Coach metal tag bag? Sorry, I realize these are a bunch of questions — appreciating your collective expertise!

I agree. Lillian Cahn told a story that I think is about this style. She suggested a design modeled after a paper shopping bag.
