BUYER BEWARE: Back in September, I ordered a brown crocodile St. Laurent handbag - shortly after I received an unopened, undamaged box from Fed ex. Inside the fed ex box, there was a St. Laurent box and dust bag BUT inside the dust bag was a black Love Moschino handbag. I immediately reached out to Vestiaire customer service and informed them I recovered the wrong merchandise and provided photos. I have been in contact with Vestiaire customer service ever since documenting everything along the way. Vestiaire has taken zero responsibility and has done absolutely nothing to remedy the situation, They have not allowed me to return the incorrect merchandise I have received. They have not given me a refund. They have not sent me the correct bag. Instead, they simply keep telling me to open another claim with fed ex as it MUST be fed ex’s fault — 6 fed ex claims and months of dialogue with Vestiaire CS and NO one is doing a damn thing. Fed ex delivered the box as they received it and I received it in perfect form. There is no denying that. And yet, Vestiaire’s answer is that someone at fed ex opened my box guessing it contained a handbag and happened to have a spare handbag on hand to replace it with. Yeah — that makes sense. Do NOT purchase from this site and if you do, pray you get the correct item because customer service is a joke!
What a nightmare scenario!
I used to be such a fan of these platforms, mostly because I had never had a problem with them and you can find rare items sometimes... And I used to be very brazen as well, ordering from foreign countries to be delivered to other foreign countries, at family's, friends, hotels etc. never having a problem, totally trusting the process.
But recently, I have had a series of bad experiences that have totally cooled be me off. Particularly, I bought a cashmere cardigan on VC in "Very good condition". For once, I paid for verification (as I am increasingly weary of frauds) and yet the item came with an unmentioned massive tear at the collar, you could insert three fingers in it! What was so shocking it the verification deemed it "compliant"! So turned off. But I did not fight it off (by the time I collected my item, the return window had already closed) and was able to sew it up.
On Poshmark, someone tried to stitch me up with a shrunken merino cardigan: the lady had clearly put it through the washing and it came out felted basically; it was so tight I could barely put my arms through and the sleeves had shortened so much they stopped at mid-forearm! Nothing like the flowy cardi in the pictures and so dishonest! I fought that one off and won.
As a strategy, I always pay via PayPal, via a credit card. That gives you recourse; if your claim with VC does not resolve, you can move up one level and open a case with PayPal, then with your credit card. I have always found PayPal to be good and quick with claims.
People also seem to have it good with their credit cards when they open cases. Mine sucks, they'll only move their @sses if there is fraud, other than that you're on your own with the merchant.
I also now systematically pay for the verification for big ticket items, to ensure I do not receive empty boxes, the wrong items or a damaged good. I do believe the quality of service has dipped even though prices are higher, these platforms are increasingly disorganized internally and it shows, and there its a frenzy, and franticness in the air, totally related to the economy and their collective bad financial performances.
I have decided to cool down for 2024 and only buy locally where I can see and touch first, at least for now.
