BB, the 500 post requirement is for members to help with authenticating, not to request help.
The 500 post minimum requirement is for someone that wants to help to authenticate items not the person seeking authentication.
The 500 posts is not to have something authenticated for you but to authenticate for others.
I LOVE that we have members that are so helpful to oldies and newbies alike!! How lucky are they (and we!).
Clearly I need to word this differently because I am already confusing people![]()
We are not saying they need 500 posts to RECEIVE an authentication, but rather to GIVE an authentication. Hope that clarifies this better for you. I can hardly imagine you want newbies to GIVE authenticity evaluations here.
Sorry, I did misunderstand. There's been so much back and forth and I thought (at least at some point), there was discussion about newbies coming solely for authentications and a minimum post requirement was discussed.
I have no issue with authenticators being required to have a history.
Actually I prefer it when the photos are uploaded directly. Then those photos are still there when I do a search on the forum. Sometimes I have trouble enlarging the Photobucket pictures enough, and it is impossible to do authentications on my phone where I can't have multiple windows open.
Another problem with posting links to image hosting sites is that often, once the person gets their authentication, they remove the images (from their photobucket or whatever site) and we see error messages for the inactive/unavailable removed images.Ahhh, OK, that makes sense..
I had not thought of the phone aspect, But, that is most likely
because I can't see mine….![]()
I personally do not like it when they are attached in the thread. It clogs up the thread and they aren't enlargeable. I MUCH prefer PB for authenticating, but understand how it's a bummer for the reference threads. I don't ever authenticate on my phone, so that is not an issue for me.
Is there a way maybe on the reference threads, to suggest that PB links not be used? Of course, a suggestion only as I don't think it's enforceable. I encourage people to use PB in the AT thread as a lot of times the zoom feature does help - at least for me anyway. Likewise, can we add a blurb that phone pics really don't cut it as 99.99% of the time, they are not clear or close enough to see details properly? Just as a suggestion.
Another question about the page 1 'rules' - if we can choose whether or not to follow them, what about the posting format? As I'm given to understand, it does help with the search functionality of the thread, correct? Do we still want people to use the 'proper' posting format for that reason?

Although the questioner got their answer, those images can also help lurkers and future members in learning about how to identify fakes, what to look for, etc. Uploaded images allow us to see those pictures.
I guess it has just been a long time since I have tried to upload
photos directly to tPF..
is there still a limit on how many photos you can upload here?
Yes. I think it's only 4 per post. Sometimes people complain that they can only load one pic at a time. Most people don't know your pictures have to be a certain size or they won't load.
Honestly, I don't think authenticators on the Hermes thread only authenticate Ebay items. They do require that the bag be in a "live" auction (meaning up for sale and NOT already sold) and that can be on other sites such as Mallories, Portero, Haute Gallery, etc.
Sometimes those sites and even Ebay sellers don't provide enough photos for genuine authentication, the photos are not clear, etc., and the authenticators will mention that as a reason for not being able to give advice on a particular bag.
As Hermes bags are quite costly, I appreciate the thoroughness of the of these outstanding authenticators and have asked them to help me just a few times over the years. Since they are so careful, I've always ended up with a totally genuine bag which the Hermes SAs always compliment me on. No, they don't know I got some of these bags on the secondary market.
By the way, it's one of my favorite TPF threads and I read it daily.
I have been helping with the AT thread on Chanel-just referring people to outside auth. etc. While we ask for many pics, posters can't load them all into a single post, and it turns into several. At least the ones that follow the instructions!
Someone else mentioned here that pics taken with phones are hard for auth. but I would bet most don't have a camera and they do all their TPF by phone.

I agree with this 100%.

Guilty! Still haven't figure out how to upload from photobucket or make my pic size smaller.
I love reading all this discussion and was confused too about the 500 post. But I think the 500 minimum post to authenticte is a great idea.
Wouldn't it be fun if there would be a General TPF conference like Comic Con? To discuss things like this?
Just thinking loud...
