Tips for Bringing Home Hermes Boxes When Traveling?

Just a quick note. As mentioned, I mailed the empty box back to myself with laundry last Wed afternoon from Paris so I wouldn't have to deal with it flying back and my luggage was not large enough to hold it - even with the lid off. I received it this Monday - so it took 5 days.

Happy to report that the box was intact except for 2 small nicks - no big deal. I bought bubble wrap, brown paper, packaging tape and scissors from Office Depot (there are several locations in town) to get it done. No extra large shipping boxes at Office Depot to house the B35 orange box - but they did have boxes sufficient for the B30 orange boxes. I used the entire lot of bubble wrap and made sure the corners were extra secure.

At the Post Office, I was concerned about explaining what I needed done since my French is not up to par. But they were very kind. They provided the customs form which I filled out and that was it. The cost was 53 euros or approx. $60 US.

I realize now that the hotel front desk could do this for you per a fellow Tpfer.

I have always done the Office Depot method as I do not check bags. Not all Office Depot have a box that will work for B35 as the poster above noted. I have found that Sebastopol and Grande Armee Office Depots have box that will work for B35. Try the box a couple of different ways as in one direction it wont fit but in another it is perfect. You can ask your hotel for sure but as Tustin noted, they may wrap with packing paper. On my recent trip they said packing paper was no problem, and they could find a box but it might not be until the next day, so I opted to make one Office Depot attempt, which turned out to be successful. La Poste is awesome, I have always had fantastic service from them.

I was able to take my B35 and separately the box in the shopping bag as cabin luggage. It was a flight from Paris to Vienna via Frankfurt, so short haul and with Lufthansa. Had no issues whatsoever. I checked the cabin sized luggage so I could take the box with me.

Good point. The Office Depot I visited was on Blvd St Germain across from the Odeon metro stop. It was a tiny store with a small basement - limited space. Thanks for the tips.

I was able to fit my b35 box inside my luggage. Between my husband and I, we brought 1 small carry on suitcase and 1 large suitcase along with a Lv Keepall. Going to Paris my husband had a foldable duffle bag that we left folded in the luggage (in case we had to check in the small carry on luggage)

We had to keep one side of the large luggage empty in order for the luggage to close over the box. We used our clothes to wrap the box and various items to keep the box from moving. We checked in both luggages and used his duffle and the lv Keepall as a carry on.

The box arrived to Toronto Canada in great condition. There's 2 tiny creases but not sure if that was there before? IMG-20170529-WA0029.jpeg IMG-20170529-WA0031.jpeg

I read some post here before my trip last year. Some people mentioned that you can pack it at airport. That's what I did as well. I only brought carry on luggage which is not big enough to hold the 35 big box. So I brought it to the airport which plastic bagged clothing in it and the orange paper bag. The guy at the terminal was very nice and found a big box for it. I also put a folding bag in as cushion. Then he wrapped with plastic many layers. As I remember I paid 35 per box, checked in, and it arrived perfectly without any dent. It's quite convenient.

I pack my laundry in the box/anything else I won't need for a few days and ask the concierge to ship it back for me. I don't check luggage so if I do any shopping on a trip I usually have to mail something home anyway.

This is not an overseas question, but only thread I found about shipping packages. If your SA is out of state, how do you get your purchases home? Mine is across the country, so I always pay Hermes (approx $75) to ship my packages home. They're insured, someone at home signs for them, etc. Does anyone else do this or do you bring them on the plane? Do SA care if you ask the store to ship?

Shipping is never a problem when I ask...my store is out of state too. They have a shipping person who double checks everything and manages the process so it's no difference to your SA whether you ship your packages or carry them out the door. I only take on plane when I can't stand to wait...or when the tax savings is negligible to the shipping cost. But lots of times they wave the shipping fee, particularly if the item can be found online. My SA said that since they offer free shipping for online orders they are able to do that.

If I am not in my home town, I never carry things out of the store. I always have it shipped home, whether it's Barneys, BG or H. Just easier than carrying stuff around. And, as others have said, lower taxes also make it worthwhile on big ticket items. I have never had a problem with poor packaging and the like. The worst thing is having to have someone home to sign for the package.

Question, how do you pack your Hermes shopping box once you leave to airport? It's pretty big. If you carry it wouldn't custom see it and pull you over? I'm heading to Europe in November and will stay in Paris 5days to be safe, I really prefer old system.

I think there's a separate thread for this.. But basically either pack the box (empty) in check in luggage and handcarry the bag.. Or mail the empty box home..

I mailed it back to the states using La Poste. It costed me about $110 to ship back a box for size 35 birkin and a box for size 30 birkin.
