Oh yes, Uli!

The weather has been very tropical... off and on rain. DS and I ventured out today and I brought Courage with me.

Here is us in front of the Hauola birthing stone in Lahaina. The birthing stone is just above our hands. It is in near the harbor, in front of the public library. This stone is shaped like a short-backed seat and was a place of spiritual power (mana) for royal women to give birth.

Here is the public library (on the left) and the Pioneer Inn, which was originally built in 1901.

Turn around, and this the view of Front Street.

If you head toward Pioneer in, next to the harbor, you see this. The oldest Pacific lighthouse.

Past the lighthouse is the old Courthouse, which now houses the historical association stuff and (I think) a gallery. You can also see a corner of the Banyan Tree.

Last shot for today.... Near the lighthouse is an old anchor that DS likes to climb over... I set Courage down on it for a picture of Lanai. Lanai used to be THE place for pineapple growing. Bill Gates got married there. Now, 98% of Lanai is owned by Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle.

Thanks ladies!

Uli, DS doesn't like wearing any jewelry. He'll try on all my jade or jewelry for a moment and then is done with it. I'm tempted to buy a bunch of tiny jade beads and sew them onto his favorite shirts or shorts and on his shoe laces. lol

Time to catch up a little.

Here's Courage on Front Street... I spent a lot of time just walking up and down this street in high school (nothing else to do on an island before common internet times! lol) and would check out all the galleries and shops.

In a Gallery that DS likes because it's a lot of underwater scenes....

Lots of jewelry shops, too. Sadly, no jade.

So here's close to the other end of Front Street, looking back toward the gallery and the library.

There's actually a small "shoreline access" in this area next to a restaurant. I guess you could go swimming here, but I have never seen anyone do it. There are no showers/public bathrooms in this area. Most beach parks, do... but it is not required for simple "access" points.

If you didn't know, ALL beaches in Hawaii are state public land until the high tide mark. There are no privately owned beaches in Hawaii, with the exception of military bases and security/safety issues... like Kahoolawe Island, which used to be used as a target practice through most of the 80s. They worked on cleaning up UXOs, but it is still dangerous and you need special permission and clearance to even be in the waters around the island.

I let Courage go for a swim.... Sand and Sea!

That's it for today.... ALOHA!

Okay, some evening shots. This is from the top of the parking structure at Queen Kaahumanu Shopping Center looking west at the West Maui Mountains as the sun sets. There is very little cloud cover... the West Maui mountains are one of the wettest places on earth. This night, however, it's a nice clear evening.
