is it normal to tarnish when stored? What type of metal is it made of?
I have seen many experience the same thing. I just figured that since I wasn't using it and every time I inspected it, I saw tarnish on it, may as well get rid of it. I wish they'd have locks that did not experience tarnish. In the past I heard the Alma BB locks did not tarnish the way Speedy locks did. Not sure of this personally since I don't own an Alma BB.

It oxidizes very quickly and tarnishes super fast, even while sitting in its own dust bag. I’ve heard people using toothpaste to brighten it but I’ve never done that. I never used the lock because of this. It just looks old and dingy to me.

Yes, they’re different materials. TBH, LV sucks for doing this, using matching all-shiny hardware on Almas while using mismatched/some duller hardware on Speedy’s, which are expected to tarnish. Canadian Tire has Brasso for this & only costs $6 (cheaper than Amazon)

Here are comparison pics of my brand new Speedy & Alma PM (natural light & sunlight)D68E65AB-1954-4D15-9D62-7FB4AF4FA992.jpeg16011247-8A85-4C8A-A8A9-8C1FAF82B254.jpeg

Yea, I wonder what the reasoning behind it is. My speedy also has the duller hardware, but shiny on the strap. And I have the PA in mono and DA. And the mono one is the dull hardware, and the DA is the shiny. My ZCP is also the dull. Super annoying.

It’s actually really easy to get your locks shiny again. I use Blue Magic metal polish cleaner and shine my locks and other hardware when it starts to tarnish. All you need is a few minutes with a small amount of the cream and a microfiber cloth. Here’s a before and after photo.

I also use the Sunshine polishing cloth for zippers and other parts where I don’t want to use the cream. They both work great to bring that desired shine back to your bags. And both can easily be found on Amazon. Hope that helps!
