The minimalist wardrobe : Support/progress thread

I slowly started to pare down in March 2017. I flirted with the idea of minimalism before that time, but never made any drastic moves. The catalyst this time was breaking up with a boyfriend with hoarder tendencies. Just being in his home made me feel anxious! This breakup was an emancipation from not only him, but from the “stuff” that internally and spatially made me feel weighed down/confined.

So, for about the last two years I’ve gone through countless waves of purging. I completely changed my aesthetic (use to be colors and patterns galore). With so much, and no clear aesthetic- I was afflicted with the “I never have anything to wear” syndrome.

I decided I felt my best and most “me” when I stuck to neutral colors/solids only. Since, I have learned that I further like to narrow this to cool toned neutrals only. Eliminating warm nudes and such..

I also became much more particular about quality. Since my focus narrowed, I honed in on buying only well made pieces of high quality fibers. I built this wardrobe consisting of all cool toned neutrals, and only my favorite staples- high waisted trousers, oversized blazers, etc.. I decided I never enjoyed denim pants, so they were eradicated.

After I built my perfect staple wardrobe/personal uniform, I decided to solely focus on high fashion statement pieces. They needed to have impact! I enjoy the oversized menswear/formalwear suiting instead of dresses when I step out for the evening. So I’ve been building on my Dior Homme pieces. I enjoy a statement statement heel, usually by Prada.

A lot of my wardrobe is multifunctional which I believe aides in a wardrobe leaning more minimal. I really enjoy doing a thick black legging paired with my oversized blazer for night. Think Saint Laurent Le Smoking. (The same legging I use to workout in). It’s not expected, but it works so well for me.

My wardrobe is by no means “extreme minimalism”. I would define it as a minimalist aesthetic, that I am constantly questioning to make sure nothing superfluous clouds the direction of what I want it to be. Sleek, minimal, high fashion.

Wow, this is great inspiration!

@JenJBS Thank you! I am very excited!!
@More bags Thanks!! I most definitely will. One of the reasons I quit my current job was feeling stagnant. New job will definitely be challenging, but a welcome challenge!

As for paring down my closet, I decided to get rid of only three scarves. Two I will give to a woman I work with who loves scarves, and the other was too expensive to give away so I will try to sell it. I never even wore it once! Didn't make it to jewelry, so will try that tonight.

I wouldn't describe myself as a minimaliste, I tend to focus on few items of good quality and wear them as often as I can. I have a small wardrobe and try to do seasonal wardrobe changes, which is not so easy as the weather in the UK varies so much!!!!

This is my wardrobe for the Winter, only 24 pieces and it works ok. There are few pieces that I'd like to add but I'll only buy the right items.

Do you guys think the two threads should be merged?
are similar indeed, sorry if I got confused by the title of the other one thinking it’s “closet” as the storing space itself and not so much discussion but “show”! And I was hoping this could be more discussion and support and advice on building a minimalist wardrobe . But I can see the content is quite similar

I received my glasses organizer in the mail today and designated a drawer for my glasses! So now in the morning when I pick what glasses I want to wear, I have them all at a glance instead of hidden in their cases and me trying to dig through the mess that was on top of my dresser to find the pair I am thinking of. I have contacts, but rarely wear them because I love how I can accessorize my outfit with my different glasses. Next up is cleaning and organizing the top of my dresser, which includes jewelry. I have procrastinated, but will do this tomorrow as I'm off work.

(The left row is all Rx, but the only sunglass that is Rx is on the right second from the top. The other three are plano for when I wear my contacts.)

I just put an image from last year. its not showing my drawer chest though (with pullovers / tshirts / underwear)
This year I have something similar but a nicer clothes rack in wood, with boxes underneath to store pullovers, tshirts, gym wear, shoes, underwear. Also I take out 2 seasons at the time : spring/summer & fall/winter, and store the rest.
Although some items are out all year round...living in Scandinavia.

Do you wear pullovers / sweaters / cardigans?
I find them convenient and easy to wear but at the same time for me it´s difficult to look chic with them. I´m always debating between a classic straight fit and a more trendy oversize / large sleeves
The only items I have in that category are my Dior (Homme) pullovers in grey and black.

Otherwise I’ve found I love doing a heat tech crew neck under a blazer to stay extremely warm and still look chic. The pullovers I wear to the most casual settings.. ie getting a pedicure etc...

So I did go through my scarves. Gave two to a woman at work who loves scarves and will sell one of the more expensive ones. Went through my jewelry as well and got rid of close to half. Also purchased a new jewelry stand (for everything except my long necklaces). It's so much nicer to look at compared to the old clunky one I had.
