The minimalist wardrobe : Support/progress thread

I slowly started to pare down in March 2017. I flirted with the idea of minimalism before that time, but never made any drastic moves. The catalyst this time was breaking up with a boyfriend with hoarder tendencies. Just being in his home made me feel anxious! This breakup was an emancipation from not only him, but from the “stuff” that internally and spatially made me feel weighed down/confined.

So, for about the last two years I’ve gone through countless waves of purging. I completely changed my aesthetic (use to be colors and patterns galore). With so much, and no clear aesthetic- I was afflicted with the “I never have anything to wear” syndrome.

I decided I felt my best and most “me” when I stuck to neutral colors/solids only. Since, I have learned that I further like to narrow this to cool toned neutrals only. Eliminating warm nudes and such..

I also became much more particular about quality. Since my focus narrowed, I honed in on buying only well made pieces of high quality fibers. I built this wardrobe consisting of all cool toned neutrals, and only my favorite staples- high waisted trousers, oversized blazers, etc.. I decided I never enjoyed denim pants, so they were eradicated.

After I built my perfect staple wardrobe/personal uniform, I decided to solely focus on high fashion statement pieces. They needed to have impact! I enjoy the oversized menswear/formalwear suiting instead of dresses when I step out for the evening. So I’ve been building on my Dior Homme pieces. I enjoy a statement statement heel, usually by Prada.

A lot of my wardrobe is multifunctional which I believe aides in a wardrobe leaning more minimal. I really enjoy doing a thick black legging paired with my oversized blazer for night. Think Saint Laurent Le Smoking. (The same legging I use to workout in). It’s not expected, but it works so well for me.

My wardrobe is by no means “extreme minimalism”. I would define it as a minimalist aesthetic, that I am constantly questioning to make sure nothing superfluous clouds the direction of what I want it to be. Sleek, minimal, high fashion.
I absolutely love your minimalist aesthetic wardrobe!! Thanks for sharing this post and the pics too!! :)

We need photos!

I decided not to clean up any beforehand so you can see how rarely I use my jewelry. Crap everywhere! It's a dumping ground. I don't wear 90% of the jewelry I own, so have been looking into some different, smaller jewelry boxes or racks. The pieces I usually wear (when I remember) are the necklaces hanging to the right, and then maybe three pairs of the earrings you see in the middle. I never wear my bracelets, I literally cannot remember the last time I wore a bracelet. Years. And I am looking for a vertical case to keep my Rx glasses in, since I like to have about four per Rx change to mix up the looks.

Both sides of my small walk-in closet; I realize this is waaaaay smaller than a lot of the ones I've seen here (in terms of both size and volume) but even this is too much for me

Scarves; with the way the scarf hanger is, there are more scarves beneath the ones you see, it's 2 layers. Haven't worn one in years.
Edit: I wonder if these are too long to tie to the side of one of my larger crossbody bags for a little embellishment. Maybe they'd be too long though, they're all around 70 inches long.

Thank you for the pics, and ypur great post earlier. I also have some scarves I haven't worn in way too long. You're inspiring me to decide to use them or get rid of them. Love shoes, so looking forward to seeing which shoes you add to your closet.

I need to look up ways to repurpose scarves. I still love the designs on the ones I have, so would feel bad to donate them because visually I still enjoy looking at them. I pull them out every so often and pine over the fact that I don't wear them haha.

Yes, I am so excited to get some new shoes! I want some black/white modern looking sneakers, a plain white pair, then some slides and flats. My rain boots are fine. Idk if I'll get designer boots, I'm not the type to wear boots. I'm also a size 11 in women's, so I have a really difficult time finding shoes I like that fit me. That's probably why I've avoided getting into shoes up until this point, when recently I'm not happy with how my outfits look with the shoes I already own.

So I went through my closet a bit ago and rather quickly separated the pieces I wanted to keep from the ones I didn't mind donating. 54 tops did not make the cut. I was asking myself, "If was to go out shopping, would I rather wear my favorite black long sleeve top, or this one?" And most of the time, evidently, I'd rather wear a long sleeve black top. Then there were a few tops I really loved the look of, but then remembered when I did wear them, they had issues such as making under my arms sweat more due to bagginess, or bunching up unattractively. This was my method throughout. I'm going to keep them around for a little bit, however, as I'm in the process of losing weight and don't want to get rid of the majority of clothes that still fit me! Hopefully I will be starting a new job soon (will find out if I get it within the next couple of days, actually) and will get to wear scrubs every day. If that happens, I can REALLY make my closet minimalist, as I won't need to pull from it as often as I do now. Next up is my jewelry, and deciding on a new jewelry box/stand.

As far as expanding my tiny shoe collection, I've decided for my white sneakers to go with this Adidas pair:

I'm with you on not wearing 90% of my jewelry. I was thinking that it's because it's hidden away in a cabinet, but clearly having it out and visible isn't helping you either. :) Hm.

I don't wear bracelets because I type all day. I don't switch out my earrings because... I don't think of it? I don't wear necklaces because I'm always wearing scarves. I wear my rings... when I remember.

You mentioned looking for vertical storage for your glasses: My BF bought me this: https://ameico.com/products/tat-tat-sacco-glasses-holder?variant=44953576141 and it's a lifesaver now that I need reading glasses scattered around the house. I have the blue-gray and it's discreet, plus holds 2 pairs of (slender reading) glasses. Is that what you're looking for, or more a set of drawers?

Also, may I recommend buying a set of matching hangers? I found that even before purging, a set of slimline velvet hangers made my clothes look so much less chaotic. Under $50 for 100 on Amazon, and just visually such a relief! Also, you have to touch every piece to switch over, and I have to say some pieces didn't make it just because it wasn't worth the slight physical effort! :D

Those are pretty much all the reasons I don't wear mine, except the scarf issue. I love the bracelets I have, but I type a lot during the day and it clinks and clacks on the desk and it's too annoying. Starting today, I am going to make an actual effort to wear my jewelry every single day. It shouldn't be difficult, since I only wear one piece at a time, generally. Since I like simple outfits, I want my jewelry or bag to be the focus. So I only wear earrings or only a necklace to draw attention there. Today I'm wearing small, clear resin hoops. They're light, comfortable, and look good with the outfit I'm wearing today.

I have seen those storage cases online before and considered them, but I need something like a box to hold four or five at a time so I can select which pair I want to wear for the day. I was considering this box, but am still thinking. It can be mounted on the wall as well, which would save space. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074SXM2N...olid=33SFDVWJD615F&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

I am definitely going to get some nice hangers once I curate my closet further! I love the clean, neat look of a closet organized by color and all hanging on uniform hangers. That will be another thing for me to keep an eye out for. I don't need anything expensive, but more than the plain plastic, mismatched hangers I've been using for the past 15 years.

Excellent at getting started with the jewelry!

That box looks perfect, then! Yeah, my use case is "have a pair of reading glasses in any possible room I might need them, and have them not fall behind the sofa" not "make an aesthetic choice to go with an outfit." :D

I already made a purchase mistake this year by purchasing vintage pants that are too tight on me, while I prefer my pants not being leg-corset like.
The wardrobe itself is quite moderated one, and I definitely know which clothes make me feel great and confident.
Most of my purchase come from re-sale market, and most malls make me feel uncomfortable.
I plan to avoid buying clothes till April, unless they belong to the following category: vintage Helmut Lang/ Margiela/ Ann Demeulemeester/ Van Noten/ Yamamoto/ Sacai/ Jil Sander/ Stuart Weitzman shoes.
These designers are not easy to find in my country (luckily, they are mostly to be found in thrift shops), so no huge spendings are expected.

I wouldn't describe myself as a minimaliste, I tend to focus on few items of good quality and wear them as often as I can. I have a small wardrobe and try to do seasonal wardrobe changes, which is not so easy as the weather in the UK varies so much!!!!

This is my wardrobe for the Winter, only 24 pieces and it works ok. There are few pieces that I'd like to add but I'll only buy the right items.
