Okay, so here’s something I occasionally think about when I’m somewhere waiting for something and am bored out of my mind: In my minimalist wardrobe fantasy, there is a single outfit that does it all and is ready for anything. The ultimate “traveling light” of outfits. It is comfortable on a plane, could go to formal dinner, a business meeting, to the opera, to a wedding or funeral, a walk in the park, lunch at a beach bar, be reasonably comfortable to hang out in, and works four seasons. When I’m really bored and feel like challenging myself I’ll include funny things like it also has to look good riding a horse or camping. Then I challenge myself to come up with the ultimate clothes-on-your-back outfit. I think I have decided on the outfit but have not managed to imagine it four seasons without at least one change of shoes.

What would your one outfit be, if the only “suite” of clothes you could own was what you had on?

Oh I love this game so much. The series of mystery novels by Sue Grafton, a is for alibi etc. has heroine who dresses very casually, but she has one black jersey dress that she pulls out whenever she needs to look nice. It always tickles me when she pulls it out of the backseat of her car or her closet floor and shakes it out and puts it on, but that is essentially my dream go to outfit. I have a light jersey knit Eileen Fisher black dress which I adore. Perfect for a plane, for sightseeing, nice dinner, opera, traipsing around the Acropolis. In fact I bought it because I needed a dress for a funeral but I wanted it to be useful for all these other things as well. I don’t horseback ride and I don’t camp anymore so my requirements are easier than yours. My perfect dress does require different shoes, jacket, or scarf as needed to make it perfect for the occasion.

Love it! I am trying to picture your dress. Is it short or long?

I believe my outfit is the Dior Bar jacket and slim pants in black. Since I’ve only allowed myself one set of clothes in this minimalist fantasy, I’d wear it with some sort of long sleeve silk tee shirt in white or maybe a white silk blouse with a detachable tie. Shoes are tough because I have pretty tight parameters (more mental gymnastics this way!) so the only thing I could think of that would allow me to go to a business meeting, a walk in a park and ride a horse (lol!) is something like a slim black calf bootie. Maybe the Hermes Neo. I could wear my outfit with or without the tee and if I needed to walk on a beach I could take off the boots and jacket and go barefoot. In a more permissive scenario I could pack some high heeled sandals and a few pairs of earrings and a scarf.

I wondered, because you would need pants to ride. Maybe YSL le smoking or similar.
I can see a pair of white jeans with a black sweater or really any black top working for me for pants outfit.

Lol! I was thinking about how James Bond just shows up all over the world in every situation wearing a dark suit and tie and always looks great. One of them, maybe Pierce Brosnan (?) even wore his suit and tie chasing a villain on some sort of jet ski and then went underwater. I laughed when he was underwater and adjusted his tie. That’s what I’d love to have, sort of the perfect Jane Bond outfit—great for dashing around the world at a moment’s notice looking chic in all situations.

I bought it from Wood Wood but for example the Spanish brand Paloma wool also makes not so super unisex minimalistic clothing which is a brand amomento and wood wood carries!
otherwise amomento delivers worldwide but I’m too stingy to pay customs
I’ll take a look thanks. I’ve seen that brand going around on vestiaire Co

I think I would go for a beautiful suit. A large blazer with a high waist carot pants
And a silk button shirt.
One pair of shoes would be ballerina flats.
i still haven’t found any of these though! Preparing for my fall wardrobe.
If anyone has brand suggestions especially for the trousers and ballerinas?
They should be cool not too old lady like. Pointy but not too much.
I think for the blazer I’ll buy the Loreo from Toteme. It’s oversize but not overpriced.
One member here really inspired me with her masculine/féminine minimalist luxury curated outfits.
Actually I say ballerinas but my entire life has been full of derby’s and Richelieus. Although I would probably end up too masculine.

I am starting to look into my fall/winter wardrobe. I have bought two silk slipdresses (to wear under dresses) and two new 100 denier Wolford tights.
I normally wear a long tanktop underneath dresses, but I feel I need a bit more luxury in my everyday, and I love wearing (strechy) silk.

Since I became a mom almost 3 years ago I have worn cheap tights instead of Wolford, which I used prior. But now it is time to go back to Wolford, so I hope they still fit my newer bodyshape
I’m also interested in where you found the slip dresses pls!
also, I find wolford items (underpinnings, stockings and stretchy loose tanks) are comfortable, wear like iron, and can be machine washed

@mellecyn, I like valentino flat mules and all birds but I realized the first may be too staid for you and the second isn’t really dressy, but here’s a list of options (IMO, if your foot is broad, the Rothy point is very cute but go up a half to a full size). The best trousers IMO are brunello cuchinelli, but they are super expensive. However, I live in charcoal grey twill trousers in the winter and if you only have one pair, these are it. I prefer the cuts that are more straight legged than pegged as I have larger calves. Gunex (much less expensive) used to be owned or affiliated with Brunello, and I love my gunex pants too! I’m also fond of a loafer as an alternative to flats (I buy one on sale from brands like Tods or Ferragamo

OK, so I think I would opt for an exceptionally well tailored pair of trousers, likely soft pleated
with a reversible suede/leather coat from (H) as I think they do minimalist in this category
very well or perhaps (The Row). A simple cashmere turtleneck classic silk/cotton tee short sleeve for summer longer
sleeve for winter & classic ballet flats likely from Chanel because the fit for me is so good
& again timeless.
Clothes need to really be impeccably tailored & that makes a huge difference
I reflect on Audrey Hepburn's simple black top, pants & ballet flats.. what a statement
& how chic she was.. to me that is what style is about & having that one outfit that can go
almost anywhere
