I wrote about my allergy related wardrobe struggles a few weeks ago (metal allergies), and now after I tested really everything I come in contact with (jewelry, buttons, closures, chain straps, zippers..), here is the result: Nearly all clothing items are safe for me to use, and only 2 jewelry pieces tested positive (one will be altered and one donated - was costume jewelry), and unfortunately the hand-me-down leather gloves from my great grandmother have decorative metal parts with nickel. But interestingly - and very fitting here for the purse forum - nearly half of my bags & wallets tested positive (more than half if I don't count bags that don't have any metal on them in the first place), including a 3 year old
Coach bag and a vintage Miu Miu bag. Thankfully my two most used everyday bags (simple black tote and simple black crossbody bag) as well as my two most expensive bags (Hermès & Philip Lim) tested negative.
But 4 out of the 5 backpacks (leaving me with one very casual fabric backpack) that I own will leave my collection as well as all of my travel bags.
I haven't gotten rid of any bags yet, most will probably be donated to my local thrift store and I'll try to sell the Coach bag and Miu Miu bag .
But on the other side I'm excited for new luggage. My suitcase will stay but I want a new weekend bag and backpack.
Also I already notice that I miss my leather backpacks. I had two black ones and one in lavender. But I will take my time with deciding on this purchase.
The sad thing for me is: going forward second-hand is tricky. I noticed that the older the bag, the more likely it will give off nickel. Also bags made for the European market are safer on average. I really like shopping second-hand, especially with bags, but for now I'll look more into small ethical designer brands, where I can ask about the materials before purchase.
