Do you pronounce the second syllable of Damier the way you do Cartier or Baume & Mercier? I have never heard it, just seen it in print.

The pronounciation of the second syllable sounds similar to "yay".
The "i" in the "mier" part is spoken very quickly, so rather than sounding like "mee yay", it sounds more like "yay".

I think either way you say it will be fine. dah me ay is the way I type what I hear my husband say it. I know that there's this class at my university that concentrates on french pronunciation and how to write it phonetically, but I haven't taken it yet, so that's the best I can do. I think the difference between the two depends on where you place the emphasis and in french I think that you're supposed to put equal emphasis on each and saying dam yay would not even really recognize the i in damier (the second syllable of 3). I know, this is probably more confusing than it needs to be.

Really? The SA's at the boutique pronounced it as "Dam yay". I guess the SA was wrong then? :wondering

Depends on what part of France you come from. the northern accents can be pretty different from, say, Paris.

Here's another one for you.

Vernis Houston (is Houston pronounced like the city in Texas?)

The SA at the LV in Charlotte pronounced it like Halston. I didn't want to say anything because I don't speak French and didn't know.
