The story behind
A particularity of Hermès ties is that they are not simply cut from printed fabric. The different sections that make up the tie are printed on a square of blank silk to ensure the motifs will always face the right way. When laid out on the printing tables in Lyon, they form a particular abstract motif. This geometry inspired the designer to create the Carré en Cravates scarf – a personal patchwork layering different sections with a variety of motifs. Like a kaleidoscope effect that multiplies the motif in an abstract series, these tiny designs in repetition merge into a single motif. These tie designs were all composed by Henri d’Origny, the talented designer who worked with Hermès for more than three decades. He skillfully made his mark on every Hermès symbol.

The story behind
Petit-Duc was a famous carriage designed by Alfred de Dreux that Hermès made its emblem. Christian Renonciat thought it would be a fun challenge to track down the original technical drawings from the period, analyze the mysteries of the structure point by point, and recompose the design in the manner of an engineer, complete with diagrams and front, side, bottom and detail views. He clearly took as much delight in reconstituting the design as in listing the details of the equipage in deliciously old-fashioned language that evokes a lost world of leaf springs and kingpins. The spoked wheel is made of ash and hornbeam wood. The lacquerware is highlighted in fine strokes; the mud guards are almost calligraphic. By the mid 19th century the art of the cartwright and carriage maker was at its zenith. Beyond technique and usage, elegance was the watchword.

The story behind
Gardens inhabit the imagination of landscape gardener, engraver and illustrator François Houtin for whom the plant world is an endless source of inspiration. Some years ago he composed a dreamy personal interpretation of Leïla Menchari’s Mediterranean garden. Menchari discovered this garden in her native Tunisia at the age of 10 and it has inspired decades of creations since. She describes “creepers hugging enormous trees”, “vegetation inhabited by the rustle of bamboo in the breeze”, “the surrealism of this nature” and “the image of paradise”. A few seasons back this scarf was decorated with embroidery, stamps of multicolored flowers, blooming corollas and ornamental foliage. These colorful motifs are reproduced here through the magic of block printing.

@LadyCupid thankyou so much for posting all these pictures and details for us to enjoy. Would you happen to have the pic of the flat layout for this shawl in colour 17?

The story behind
Mount of the gods, friend of the Muses, Pegasus, the winged horse of Antiquity is transfigured by the magic of Pop culture. He can summon a spring, gushing forth with one strike of his hoof, but his name is associated with storms, too – Zeus chose him to carry thunderbolts and lightning to Mount Olympus. And it is in this role that Dimitri Rybaltchenko chooses to depict the winged brother of the beloved Hermès horse, bursting out from behind the clouds in a brilliant flash of lightning. Hatched lines, bold forms and contours, flat expanses of color, dots, and explosive energy, coupled with simple, effective line. American Pop Art is a wingbeat away.

The story behind
A love of nature and animals inspires many of Laurence Bourthoumieux’s compositions. This one is an open-air aviary that invites us into a happy, colorful world. Birds, trees and flowers live together in harmony in this tropical rainforest. Toucans with their unmistakable beaks look on as winged creatures shimmer and soar. Macaws are known for their stunning plumage and extraordinary gift for imitation; they live in groups and stay faithful to one partner. Hyacinth macaws are the largest, standing over three feet tall by adulthood! Parrots, budgerigars and quetzals – whose names come from the word “quetzalli” meaning precious feather” – share the skies and trees. All the while, hummingbirds pollinate the delicate corollas of the charmingly named passiflora or passion flower. Philodendrons, flamevines, and blossoming Brazil cherry trees add final flourishes to this dream world.

The story behind
Based on the Pirouettes au Galop scarf design.
With the immediacy of a sketch and an ease that comes from years of practice, Jean-Louis Sauvat’s lively freehand drawing of the gallop pirouette captures the grace of an equestrian exercise that calls for perfect harmony between rider and horse. Every movement of a leg, every bow of a head is imbued with the artist’s knowledge, understanding and empathy for his mount. Jean-Louis Sauvat studied art at France’s École des Métiers d’Art, in the workshop of French sculptor Robert Couturier, and became a teacher in his own right at the age of just 21. His family encouraged his choice of career: had not his great-grandfather been a friend of Seurat, Ingres and Lautrec? Dressage was Sauvat’s other occupation, pursued with the same passion as his first. His works reflect his deep love of both – when he wasn’t drawing horses, it was said, he was riding them!

The story behind
Based on the Zouaves et dragons scarf design.
Uniforms worn by the Zouaves, the French-speaking infantry unit from Africa, and the Dragoons, cavalry soldiers on foot or horseback, give name to this scarf. The artist, Virginie Jamin, was inspired by the military attire depicted in the pages of a 19th-century album conserved in the Émile Hermès collection. Decorated with braids and silk embroidery, the uniforms seemed to come alive in a majestic dance, as if inhabited by their former wearers.
