When it comes to interesting and appealing designs, I'm willing to spend a little more time brushing my Hermes shawls to keep piling at bay and live with them however they make them.
My only experience with a Chanel cashmere shawl had to be returned in less than 12 hours due to a hole from their label and I had a Chanel SA tell me runs were perfectly normal and part of the experience.
I understand Loro Piano shawls to be wonderful but I don't know of anyone with designs like Hermes.
the composition of the new CSGM will be 70% cachemire and 30% silk
Asked my SA last week why H changed the cashmere/silk ratio and she said so that the CSGMs will have a slightly heavier feel and a better "hand".
There could be additional reasons but that is what my SA stated to me.
Feel free to chime in with additional information, am totally curious about this too.

This.
Good grief, that's terrible news about Bergdorf's Hermes cashmeres. May I ask if the ones you saw were the older ones or the ones for Fall 2015 and Spring 2016?

Current season...it may have been the lighting, and it may have been the fact that these shawls were out for anyone to touch or grab and play with them. They just didn't look new or perfect, like a little fuzzy layer had already started.
And please note that the condition didn't deter me from playing with and seriously considering one of them. I just wish they weren't so delicate.
And that's the thing. In my opinion, LP makes the best cashmere, but no one comes close to Hermès for design. And even then, the newer Hermès designs I find more prettier and exciting than the old designs. So there you are!
I just wish they'd fix their cashmere. I have a cashmere-lined LP coat and a cashmere LP dress that do not pill at all - not even the armpits!!!

I only own one CSGM, Chasse en Inde, which I bought in 1987 for (I think) around $450... at the time, an outrageous sum! I've never babied it: I've used it on airplanes as both blanket and pillow, I've thrown it on over coats on snowy days, and I even used it as my "comfort blankie" during four long months of chemotherapy infusions 10 years ago. The thing is, it still looks brand new! No pilling, no thinning, the color (deep shades of navy & sapphire) has remained true, and it is even still square if I spread it out on the bed. It's never been washed or (shudder) dry-cleaned... just hung over a drying rack to air occasionally. Many thanks for the info, sissy and Vigee! A bit heavier sounds very promising, and hoping the change might improve durability. I wonder what better "hand" means. If a bit softer, that would be wonderful. I'm likely one of the few that find the 65/35 CSGMs a little bit scratchy. I'm hoping hand washing will improve that a bit, but haven't needed to yet.

Sometime between 1987 and now, it seems to me that Hermès must have changed the way they weave their CSGMs, because my understanding is that one of the new ones would never stand up to the sort of aggressive wear I've subjected mine to for the past 28 years. What do you think? Does anyone else have a CSGM as old as mine, and is your experience similar?

I was at Bergdorf Goodman yesterday and just looking at the beautiful cashmere shawls laid out together....and sadly, they just didn't look good, they all looked damaged.
