Yeah, it’s risky. I usually assume oil/grease and ink are permanent fixturesHairspray can take the colour out too.

AAAaaack. I'm thinking this bag is going to pleasantly surprise you. It's one of the best seasons for leather, and the color is special. The bad news seems to be limited to the couple of dark stains, plus some corner wear. The handles look great in the photos. I'd be tempted to give up on the ink removal pretty quickly, before it damages the surrounding color. Even a poor color match will make the stains less apparent. I love a good project too.. Good luck!Miss Freckle is arriving tomorrow, I think. All the way from France!

Can’t wait to see her actual condition. The pics were pretty bad, so I might be pleasantly, or unpleasantly surprised.
I bought some very special leather cleaners, including an ink remover.
No idea if I will actually have the guts to use them on her.
I have been toying with buying a beater bag and trying my restoration skills. I love to do that kind of stuff.
I’ve read about people putting bags in the washing machine and am itching to try it.

Oooh, can't wait to see her. If you indeed try removing the dark stain, please be really careful. Those ink removers tend to be very aggressive and can ruin the leather color as well. They can also change the leather texture, like drying the areas out. Yikes. I would put it on a q-tip and apply only on the worst parts. I have a cleaner/stain-remover spray from collonil and managed to make matters worse on a nasty ink stain on my Bordeaux DayMiss Freckle is arriving tomorrow, I think. All the way from France!

It’s a black spot, right on the lower front. My plan is to first try the remover on the stain that is on the bottom of the bag. A toothpick with a tiny bit of cotton should make a good micro Q-tip.The best luck I’ve had with removing ink is with cheap hairspray, though that was quite a while ago so formulations may have changed entirely. Is the stain right on the seam the only one?
I would try some Dawn detergent on the smallest patch possible. It’s a black spot, right on the lower front. My plan is to first try the remover on the stain that is on the bottom of the bag. A toothpick with a tiny bit of cotton should make a good micro Q-tip.

It's stunning. The price was fantastic. Think of the stains as there to keep you from biting into the leather, which I would be tempted to do.OK, here she is!
Far better as far as the leather itself, than in the photos.
The stains are on the bottom and sides!
And, well, they’re not ink. I have no idea what they could be… almost feel like tar. They are on the surface, and there is a shine to the substance.
Also, there is another spot the pics didn’t reveal.
Front and back, however, are fabulous.

Oh she's a beauty! Maybe if it's not ink you'll stand a better chance of removing it...OK, here she is!

The silver plate tags were for the classic City as of F/W 03, (some tags were still leather), the classic First, the odd Twiggy way back, Work and Weekender. Note it's only on the classic HW bags.OK I have a question, since I'm learning so much about Bal bags. What is the difference between the plate tags on the inside of the bag, or just the leather tag? Why do some only have it, and not all?
Thanks @muchstuff for that explanation. If I may also ask, what does 'HW' stand for?The silver plate tags were for the classic City as of F/W 03, (some tags were still leather), the classic First, the odd Twiggy way back, Work and Weekender. Note it's only on the classic HW bags.
