I don't believe that I said she's in the minority writing songs about heartbreak. I said she's a 35 year old woman who is still trying to get all her friends to turn against any man she thinks wronged her. I think mature women sing about getting over heartbreak, not getting revenge. Examples - Tina Turner - When the Heartache is over; Cher - Believe.
You said normal people didn’t write diss songs. That’s nonsense. Songwriters write about whatever makes them feel something - that’s revenge (These boots are made for walking) or sadness (Someone like you) or joyful (Crazy in Love). The music world would be a boring place if only one theme was regarded as acceptable.

Yes, part of her appeal is her fans deciphering every line, trying to figure out which guy did what and how badly.

I think the above list of ex BFs left out the British actor who wore a heart Taylor tee shirt while frolicking on the beach with her.

In any case, many songwriters write about their relationships, but Taylor is kind of nasty and more specific.

Definitely agree that the deciphering every line played a big part in her success. People study those lyrics like English literature novels.

Fandoms are crazy. Whatever they are obsessed about, they are going to fixate on the minutiae of the subject and argue the hell out of it. Doesn’t matter whether it’s a movie, a sports team or a celebrity. I came upon a post on Facebook today where over two hundred grown adults were discussing Bluey, which is a cartoon for preschoolers. I don’t pretend to understand it but it was obvious they were really into it. So it’s no surprise that there are thousands of Swifties going nuts analyzing her songs.

This is a very fair point -- and being that we're all members of a discussion board, I think we all have to admit that we can participate in such things. But among the people admired by those fandoms, there are some who feed into it, and others who do not. Taylor thrives on knowing her fandom will devour every possible easter egg ... and uses that regularly to get revenge on people who she things wronged her. For comparison -- how many songs has Dave Grohl written about Courtney Love, and how has he worked to turn his fans against her?

Bluey is so good though! (I - like the other adult fans - realized this accidentally the 1,000,000th time my 1 yo was watching an episode and I actually listened to the dialogue - it’s kind of like the Simpsons, one interpretation for kids and another one for adults).

I don’t find Taylor Swift engaging to watch personally, but everyone I know who has seen her perform had a memorable and fun experience.

The interesting thing is that she and her fans think her music is extremely deep and meaningful. They’re forever analyzing her lyrics.
It seems pretty common to think that about her music. I know of someone who had her lyrics read at her wedding. When I questioned her, saying at the same time that I was totally unfamiliar with her work, I kind of got bashed. I am still clueless about her, but I haven’t changed my opinion.

All Drake, Kendrick and whatever we call Kanye now DO is sing / rap diss tracks. Nobody complains about that. Why do the woman (Swift but also Beyonce, Cardi B and Katy Perry) have to rise above what clearly sells right now? Cher and Tina were popular forty plus years ago. Bit of a different time.
They're all like high schoolers who never grew up. And their fans didn't either it seems.

Hey how come nobody on here talking about TS getting BOOOO'd at the superbowl and her cute surprise reaction?
Since I’m a big Philadelphia Eagles fan I’ll speak on this. Was it cool? No. Am I surprised? No. We boo our own players when they are not playing well. Philly wanted our head coach fired in the beginning of the season! Not me…

Our fans like to think she was a big Eagles fan but I don’t believe it. Her father…yes, her? Maybe, when it was convenient to her.

As a woman I love seeing women make power moves like TS. With that being said, we are a very passionate fanbase and sometimes we take things too far. However, if she would play in Philly tmrw her show would be sold out. She’s extremely popular and relevant.

Is anyone else out there who is as huge of a Taylor Swift fan as I am? I recently discovered her (a little late, I know!) when I found out that she was the one who sang the "Teardrops On My Guitar" song. I started searching for her music on YouTube, and I love a good majority of her songs. Plus, I am super impressed that she plays her guitar and writes or co-writes her music. I just listened to her new song "White Horse" to death, and it is amazing--she performed in on the AMA last night. She does not have the vocal range of Mariah Carey or the stage presence of Britney Spears, but she is still pretty awesome and holds her own.

Anyone else?
I've been a fan since her debut album, and it's been so cool to watch her grow as an artist. What are some of your other favorite songs so far?

It’s the Super Bowl in Philly. It is a hotly contested rivalry and, if she didn’t expect booing then she needs to have a sit down with her beau. Plus, she’s written the Eagles into a song so there is a “loving the one I’m with” element to it as well.

The Eagles were my team until Vick got a second chance. I can’t cheer for them anymore but I appreciate the fervour. She should have just leaned into it.
