I think you should be able to double-insure, i.e insure with 2 companies. That could help cover most of the value of the goods. Unless it's some croc bag we're talking about here.
Felle, I just recently returned from Paris. I am getting my refund on my card so not sure about the cash part. The H store at the airport (Emirates section) was very small but I bought a large enamel and the price is duty free, I think 13% cheaper than the store but then you claim when you leave so works out the same.
Suzie, glad to noe that u've scored an enamel bracelet at the airport! Im not sure which terminal i'll be flying out (am flying with MAS). So yeah, as a fren has advised, i'm prob better off getting the list that i really want from the boutique, and then try my luck with the optional items at the airport. But, from the sound of it, the airport is def cheaper, cos the boutique offers only 10% refund. For me, citibank charges 3.3% on forex conversion!! So im going to be set back by that much, leaving me with less than 7% in refund!
Have also done abit research here for the benefit of those who waited for longer than they should for the refund money:
Step 6 from http://www.parisescapes.com/paris_department_vat_refund.html:
"You just have to wait (and wait and wait and ) to receive your refund. If you don't receive your tax refund, you have to contact the store and not the French Customs"
Hope all works out well for everyone!![]()
I might have to contact the detaxe company instead - since other than H all the other merchants I shopped with used a refund company.
Sigh. Am still waiting...
I'll have to do this in future too. It was my first time dealing with Heathrow customs, so I naively believed that the officer knew best. Do you know if there is a limit to the amount of cash you can receive in refunds at the airport?
Hi, would like to add my two cents here since I have just received my tax refund from Hermes Paris. Although the tax refund stated is 10%, the actual amount credited to my american express was more on the 8.8-8.9% level due to exchange rate fluctuations and commissions charged by american express. I received my tax refund 2 months after the transactions. Hope this helps!
I did the same thing, I used my american express for my purchases but when I was @ the airport the girl @ the counter would not accept my amex card. So I ended up giving her my visa card.In my experience, Amex gives really crappy rates, both for purchase and refunds. You can put the refund on a different card than the one you paid with, so I always put it back on a Visa/Mastercard to "maximise" the refunds a little moreMore money back means more money to spend!
