Grace Kelly, unfortunately the man at the counter was so fast. He processed everything then as I was trying to ask for my receipts he slid everything through a slot (hole) and said they will take care of everything. I tried to ask questions bec the instructions at the boutiques were different but i was waived off. I have learned my lesson and I will take your advice and make copies before checking out. Im a receipt-freak. I like holding on to my receipts. So felt really uncomfortable not having them. Oh well, next time!!! :p

Except H right :smile1:

I'm not sure what you mean, but even detaxe forms for Hermes in France can only be stamped at Heathrow if you are leaving the EU from there. Just make sure you take them back after they are stamped and post them on your own. You can post them from the US after your return, no problems – just remember to put the correct postage.

Roxane I meant that in London H requires a form to be filled out instead of getting the cash back in the store. Thanks for the info, but I think I'm going to reroute my trip so I can leave from Paris.

GraceKelly - thanks for the advice! I might be going back to Paris later this year, so I will definitely make sure to find a photocopier somehow before I get to the airport :D

AnythingHermes
- you can process detaxe from any of the EU countries if purchases are above a certain amount (I think it varies from retailer to retailer). The only catch is that when you finally get it processed, you must be leaving the EU (last port of call). So you can shop to your heart's content in Paris, then just submit everything at Heathrow.

If you opt for cash wherever possible, just note that they take a huge slice of commission from that amount. My friends and I had a joint receipt for 25 Euros of tax back, and we wanted cash so we could split it and use it in the airport, but instead of getting 25 euros, I got something like 10+ euros. Not worth getting cash for the bigger amounts, IMO. You end up getting so much less back.

if you do by chance find your birkin, you can consider mailing it back to your home address from paris. if you choose to do that they willl immediately refund the tax from the amount charged so no worries about filling any tax refund forms. note - that they'll charge a small cost for this service. i recently purchase d a kelly 32 and was charged 91 euros to send back to hk. however i'm not sure if the US customs will be charging any taxes though. you may want to check

Pyrexia - thank you for the info. I will just wait for my tax refund because the cash back option doesn't sound so good.

ballchai I don't think that I could bear to be away from my first Birkin. I want to make sure that it is safe in my arms at all times. Now I'm wondering if it will be safe in the hotel room. I'm a wreck and I haven't even purchased it yet!! :faint:

Did you do this yourself? Or did the store do it for you?

I know the stores will ship it home for you - but you will get taxed by your own country's customs since they will not under-declare its value.

If you ship it on your own - I'm not sure you can claim tax back since the detaxe form has to be shown to the customs officer who may/may not want to see the actual item.

HK has no customs duties and sales taxes. Any country with sales taxes will still charge those for shipments from Paris, so one would still have to pay up.

I KNOW, and Im wondering about the exact same thing with my new purchases! I'd prob buy them on the last day of my trip, and hang a "DND" sign on my door, to ensure that the housekeepers or anyone else dont get to come in. But then again, lugging back the orange bags to the hotel is a pretty conspicuous act!:thinkin:

Felle1984 I thought about hanging a DND sign too ;) However I will be traveling throughout france and where ever I spot my dream Birkin I will have to purchase it and lug it around with me. I guess to keep my baby safe I will just have to leave my other purse in my suitcase and lock it. Then hang a DND sign on the door so no one can steal my SO Kelly which I also love and carry by Birkin! Okay now I'm sounding paranoid :p
