have a 13-letter difficult to pronounce surname. I can hardly say it myself. I get asked constantly how I pronounce it
What a striking co-incidence!p.s. It is Jane Austen’s birthday today, 16 December 1775!!
That quote is not in that link, which is to the royal statement. Which was about them making peace on their own terms, appropriately.I have looked into this link some time.
And I 'd like to quote one sentence:
Lady Susan Hussey is being supported by Queen Elizabeth Ii former aides amid racist row.
In a conversation with Daily Mail, a staff member said: "No question, Lady Susan has been thrown under a bus and it is a massive overreaction.
"Where was anyone standing up saying, 'Wait a moment, this is a woman who has travelled to every corner of the planet and met people from every ethnic background. Is it really likely that she would be deliberately, provocatively racist?' I don't think so."
Another veteran courtier questioned: "Where is their duty of care and compassion towards a much-loved member of staff who has led an exemplary life of service and dedication to the monarchy?
"The speed with which this has taken place does not just damage Lady Susan's reputation but that of the institution as well.
The language in question is for you to wonder and for me to know! As you are of enquiring mind, serendipity might be your reward. (therein lies the clue). What complicated lives we lead with our surnames! As I am interested in all linguistic topics and in all the languages on earth, this makes me naturally curious about the language in question. But I won't ask you that, of course.
My own surname is quite short, but English people usually can only pronounce the first of the letters right.
Scottish people can get nearly everything right.
When I introduce myself to an English person, I usually mispronounce my own name, so that it can be understood and repeated.![]()
When I am asked my name by somebody who wants to write it down, I usually spell it letter for letter, so that it does not get mis-spelled. But I do not mind, as there are only 5 letters. And when it comes to the ö, is usually say: "First write an o, then put two dots on it" - to be on the safe side. Or I might say: Like the e in Noël, but with the dots on the o.What complicated lives we lead with our surnames!
I especially appreciated this part of the statement, it would be lovely if people would respect the wishes of the palace...
Ms Fulani, who has unfairly received the most appalling torrent of abuse on social media and elsewhere ....
Uhhhhh because clearly Buckingham Palace didn’t think the accusations were unfair? Why did Buckingham Palace not have the courage to defend Lady Susan Hussey against unfair accusations?
The people who know more about the situation than any of us are wrong.Buckingham Palace can be wrong.
Buckingham Palace is not infallible.
