Just had an epiphany.

I wear things about 52 times a year for the most part. I wear an outfit once a week, wash, repeat.

Why do I own so many clothes? Shouldn't my clothes last 52 wears and washes? If they don't, why am I buying those clothes?
Same with shoes.

But I own way more than 7 days of clothing. I have 10 pairs of shoes I can wear once a week and still be appropriate for my environment and lifestyle.

That's not even including things I could wear repeatedly without washes, such as sweaters, or for different occasions that aren't daily occurrences. Such as cold/wet weather, parties, formal occasions. Those I'd wear like what? A handful of times per year?

Why do I own so much stuff? Will what I own last a year? I haven't worn many things 52 times. I usually get rid of it half way through, replacing it with a brand new set of things.

The challenge will be quite interesting. [emoji848]
Let me get this right. If you wear your clothes 52 times a year that means you wear everything once a week. If every outfit is made out of 3 items that means you shouldn't own more than 21 pieces of clothing (not counting shoes, accessories, bags, hats, scarves and so on) and only if every outfit really is completely unique. It might be possible, but it would be so boring! Dressing like this would be almost like wearing a uniform, even most men I know own more suits and shirts than that. The fact that we're all meeting on this forum means we're all interested in fashion which means we like experimenting with clothes, which would be a very limited endeavor with only 21 pieces of clothing. Would you want to eat the same things all the time every 7 days? Would you want to travel to only 7 places your whole life, see 7 movies over and over, meet 7 people and read 7 books?
If you completely change your wardrobe all the time or only wear a few favorite things over and over that means you haven't quite found your style, which is fine and common at your age. And even if you do, that style will change, so why limit yourself so drastically?
Before you start your no-shopping adventure, you might want to purge your wardrobe one more time. I know you've smartly been adding mostly basics that will serve you well. Getting rid of things you don't like or don't wear or both will give you the chance to find out what doesn't work and what's missing. If you find out you love everything, you should wear everything. Otherwise your bad conscience will make you feel miserable. BTW, I've read that the average life of a piece of clothing is 7 times. So if you wear yours at least 25 times you're way better than the average woman.
(Sorry for the long post...)

True, I am here for my love of fashion. DBF does own more suits than what I expect myself to minimize to.
I don't think I'll go drastically down to just 21 pieces, due to sheer boredom and that I like clothes too much. haha.
But we also do buy on the premise of quality. Our items should last a year with ease. But they don't. Or we get tired of them way before their life span should end. So even though I buy saying I love quality and timeless styles, I barely keep anything that long. That is the biggest aspect of my shopping habits that I want to change.

I had completely changed my wardrobe completely over the years in the aspect of trying to find my style. It had always been determined by others, whether it be my peers of the time or by social media. Now that I'm settling into my love for skirts, I feel I'm getting into what I find comfortable and what I find stylish (enough).

I've been debating if I want to purge my wardrobe one more time, and I did take a long look into my closet yesterday. I was re-arranging things, making sure they all hung carefully in the closet. Although a bit crowded due to space and the volume of clothing I own, it all fits in there. I couldn't think of one thing I wanted to return, not one thing I wanted to let go of just yet.

The goal is to wear everything. To stop buying and appreciate what I own. To figure out myself and my style, so I can take note for 2019 when I am allowed to buy again.

Although yes, I can technically wear the 7 same outfits every week for a year, and I do know of people who do that. But they do not care for fashion, they just care that they look work appropriate and are out the door.
Since I care for fashion, perhaps I can re-evaluate my numbers to be similar to DBF's. He has 30 unique suits. Whatever his rotation is, somehow works, since he always has something to wear while a set is at the dry cleaners. Then everything then is worn about 12 times a year, above the average of the life span you read of. But, suits seem to last a lot longer than women's clothing.

phew. that's a lot. I don't know why I get so caught up in the number aspect of it all. It's just my wardrobe!

I do have some sort of a uniform though: blouse, skirt, flats.

I suppose I may have found my outfit formula, I have yet to find the amounts of each I can be happy with.

My grand total of clothing at the moment is 87 pieces (tops, bottoms, dresses, coats).

ETA: Long posts welcome! I like the discussion and thoughts!

I think this is a new combo (it's not in my work outfits).

Ann Taylor blouse
Uniqlo skirt
Ferragamo Vara
Pearls from the ABC store [emoji23]

And my new shoes arrived

It's a pinkish red, but I think they're cute.
I hope they don't seem matronly or out of style since this has to last for more than a year.

I think I should be able to wear these with black and navy, but probably not the other reds or greens that I've worn. [emoji848]

87 items is really not that much I'd say. Especially not if you wear everything. I don't know why it seems to be important to own only a few things nowadays. I've said many times that the capsule wardrobe just isn't for everyone. It's important to shop smart and not create a wardrobe overflowing with cheap stuff made of pour quality by underpaid or exploited women or children, but buying and being happy with well made, eco friendly garments shouldn't be a reason to be judged for. I see why you want to try a shopping ban though and I wish I was as strong and disciplined as you are and join you. Maybe in 2019.. :amuse:

It's this whole minimalism thing everywhere that's gotten me too.
It's like all millennials must be minimal and have their life together. So I might as well try, right? Haha

It's also during the KonMarie thing where I was mind blown on how much stuff I had. I'm trying to not get back into the whole shopping cycle again, which I kinda see happening from time to time when I get really tempted by sales.

We'll see how it goes. I'm pretty much ready to start the clothing part of my ban, haha. I think the bag and shoe part will be the hardest to deal with.

Try them out with everything, they're so pretty! The green could be a bit christmassy, but hey, it's less than six months away..

I'm thinking to focus my wardrobe colors on shades of black, grey, and navy.
Shades of red and beige will be my secondary colors.
Primary pattern will be florals, I'm a sucker for them.

So the greens, purple, and pink clothing I have will not be replaced when they wear out.

Accessories are still all over the place. :sweatdrop: But I'll be able to get other colors that way, I suppose.
It's just my main stuff, clothing and shoes, should be able to mix and match with ease.

Edited to add:
So basically if I try to buy more stuff outside of those colors, especially patterned clothes, please stop me. haha.

I've spent the good half of my morning caring for my things, after the usual chores.

Steamed the silks I recently wore to undo wrinkles. Cleaned and moisturized all my bags and shoes. Finished the week's laundry. Polished the recently worn pearl jewelry.

Regarding my shoes:
I can see the soles of my black Varinas are worn. I'll resole them once and hopefully that'll help their lifespan for the remainder of the year.

My brown Varinas must be breaking down because the leather feels a bit weird. :( not sure why, I think I've maintained them just as well as the others. But it is a different leather compared to everything in my collection.

These two might end up leaving my collection this year :( but I feel I've had them for at least two years, which is really long for me.

The Varas seems to be okay. Maybe I should stick to Vara next time. But I also haven't worn them as much as the Varinas.

It also seems patent and stiff calf leather are the all stars of my shoe collection, they have lasted the longest, maintain their shape and color much better than fabric or soft leather shoes.

Regarding pearls:
I feel like there needs to be something done to care for them, but there really isn't much to do for them it seems. I just wiped them all down carefully then put it away. Like...that's it. It just feels weird.
Silver requires so much more effort in polishing, you know? Lol.

Steaming silk is kind of therapeutic. Haha.

I bought a Weekend Max Mara skirt which is in my color scheme but isn't boring.

It's comfy, light, and flowy which I adore.

Will probably buy a few more pieces from Weekend Max Mara before 2018. Maybe a solid pattern skirt, their solid stuff seemed...pretty solid.
Haha! But you're right. I have max Mara skirts that are 20 years old and older. Mostly winter skirts or dresses, their summer stuff is more fashionable, si it goes out of fashion quicker that the rest. This skirt is gorgeous and goes with a lot of your clothes. What is it made off?

Finally figured out my size for those pointed, red flats.

But do they coordinate well with my wardrobe?

The shoes are red, but with a berry/pink undertone. I'm wondering if they work well with my skirts or not. If it works with these skirts, which represent the color scheme of my closet, then they are keepers. If they don't, I'll return them.

I'm known as the shopper in the family, so when someone wants something, I go with them to find it.

Bought Converse and DocMartins for my cousin, and these for me.

Melissa sandals for $33, which will look great with all my dresses when I don't want to wear flip flops [emoji23]

And the backordered pair of Ferragamo heels shipped. I might be set with shoes if those work out.

Love the red shoes. Of course they go with your color scheme. They're your summer red shoes, the darker tone is more for fall and winter. The sandals are cute, what a great buy!
Have you worn your max Mara skirt yet? Cotton is great, so easy to take care of and so nice to wear.
