Hello Ladies,
I think that I have maybe the most uncommon story to score my first bag in Hermès.
When I've decided to go for my goal bag, a Kelly 28 black epsom YGHD, I went to a boutique in France to try and see them in real life.
The SA was kind and let me try different sizes and....I had no history AT ALL !
But she understood my passion for leather goods and specially Hermès bags; I was dreaming about these since I was a teenager...I was (and I am still) a big fan of Victoria Beckham and her collection :panic:
My good star was with me this day and 6 months after, the SA call me to tell me that my bag was arrived. I couldn't believe it !

This is such a lovely story and seems a return to the days when this was the norm especially in Europe. Congrats and enjoy your bag!

Congratulations! I am so happy for you! Hope to see your pics in H in action and other threads, if you are so inclined.
What a perfect bag

It was in 2021, I was so so happy.
Of course, since this time, my history changes a little bit (be honest Carine...a lot ) as I bought items and scored other bags (1 mini K, 2 Birkin and 1 picotin cargo)
But I will always only buy things I like and I need. I don't want to play the ridiculous game of buying anything just to score a bag. And I think that the SA saw this kind of think and it's maybe the secret.

VERY long post, YMMV :
First, I’d come in about every other month. Set a spend limit if you have to, and buy at least one piece from your SA’s metier every other visit (so every 3-4 months roughly). In no particular order, focus spend on:
- Jewelry
- RTW
- Men’s items
- Home (not tablewear as they frequently are out of stock)
- Watches
Don’t forget about the St. Louis crystal collection which has some very beautiful items! The items on the first floor or front of house (scarves, belts, cosmetics, perfume, costume jewelry, SLGs etc) are nice but would have these in addition to your major spend item(s) for the visit. The goal is is to help your SA maximize their commission.

End of Q2 to mid Q3 is the best time to skip since many clients are on vacation and all of France takes Aug off 😊. On the other hand, spending at this time especially in July/Aug works to your advantage as there’s seasonally less clients and less purchases.

Timing big spending visits toward the end of the quarter (March, June, late Aug-Sept) is great for helping your SA and the store meet its quarterly goal or stretch goal. End of Q4 (Dec) is seasonally higher in revenue than other months so no need to spend then unless you want to. Holding spend until late Jan/early Feb is better since early Q1 is slow usually. The goal with timing your purchases is to stand out as a client. The best way to stand out is to spend a lot in various metiers, the second best way is to spend strategically at opportune times.

If you feel that you’ve spent too much or you’re not finding things you like, then stop going in. You’ll have to decide your own limits based on your spend tolerance (how much can you reasonably spend on Hermès a month), your desire for a QB, your overall brand loyalty (do you like other items besides QBs) and what you’re willing to trade off.

Based on my recommendation above, the calendar looks like this:

Jan - no spend
Feb - spend a bit in key metiers
March - spend in SA metier at min, spend a bit more than usual if you didn’t spend much in Feb
April - no spend
May - no spend or spend a bit in key metiers
June - spend in SA metier at min, spend more than usual if you didn’t spend much in May
July - no spend
Aug - no spend or spend in key metiers or SA metier if you’re trying to stand out
Sept - Spend a bit more than usual if you didn’t spend in July or Aug
Oct - no spend
Nov - Spend in key metiers
Dec - no spend

I know for some this is entirely over engineered, but I like thinking about how to optimize processes 😅. Hope this helps!
This is a very interesting and systematic way of planning your pre-spend.

For me, the bulk of my spending is around RTW launch months and as and when my waitlisted FJ arrive. I buy anything else I fancy during those store visits and that’s when I know if I’ve clocked enough to ask for a QB.

My SA orders a lot of my stuff off the website when I share the items I am interested in, and I read here that it is not beneficial to the store. On a recent visit, it happened again and when the items were not in stock, she immediately pulled out her device again and said she is ordering from the website. I told her I could wait for them to become available in store and she said to just order from website. I am at a competitive store and stock can be limited, but is this normal? I'd say 50% of my stuff comes from ordering off the website.

Yes that’s normal. Your SA gets commission either way so she doesn’t care. Your SM would prefer to sell his own stock so he does care, but a sale is better than no sale and waiting around for product to come in is a losing wait in this timeline.

I think everyone needs to stop counting every dollar/euro/pound/whatever as if there is some magic number formula. There is not a buzzer that goes off on your SA’s phone or the SM’s desk that indicates that you have just qualified for a QB (much less the immediate availability of QB if a buzzer did go off!).

I find that those who aren’t counting spend are (a) buying regularly and a lot, (b) have been shopping for a long time, (c) can afford not to count, (d) much happier with their shopping experience, (e) getting offers more frequently and (f) turning down offers as much as they are accepting.

Many years ago when I first started shopping at Hermes, I was not a place in my life, lifestyle or income to get a Birkin. I enjoyed getting a scarf or an enamel bracelet from time to time. The store was always so beautiful, full of color and elegance and it was a treat to buy myself something from there. Eventually, I decided I really wanted a Birkin, but beyond the scarves and enamel, nothing was appropriate for my life to buy. So I bought a perfect one at a trusted consignment store. I paid over retail, but it was exactly what I wanted and I didn’t stress about buying things that didn’t suit me or spending more than I could. It was awesome and I was so happy! (Eventually I consigned the bag back because as it turned out, a Birkin didn’t suit my lifestyle then either!).

Many years later, I’m older, further along in my career and in a different place in my life and lifestyle. All of a sudden, the stuff at Hermes and Chanel and similar that didn’t suit me are exactly my style. So now I shop when I want to and buy what I want. I still don’t stress about the bags though. And guess what? I get offers. More than I can accept. Many that are super popular. I have no idea what my spend is. It’s a lot. I bought a ton last year and only accepted one QB. I can think of just three items off the top of my head that totaled far more than the cost of that bag. And I’m just as happy shopping now at Hermes than when I was buying myself a lovely scarf. (Though it’s nice to go more often!)

Please don’t have expectations - shopping should be fun and stress free. If you really want the bag, buy it on your terms. Trust me, you will be happier.

On the flip side … isn’t this normal behavior anyway from any SA at any fashion house? If you’re asking for an item, they think that you want the item and they do their best to find you the item (including checking the website)?

+1 for the above
My SA will often order it from the website, especially if she knows that the item may not come in any time soon. That being said, she's also indicated that if I see an item that may "disappear" soon on the website - to just grab it (and then show her when I pick it up in-store ). I do think certain SAs are very understanding in that they also don't want us to lose the opportunity to get a certain item - even if it could be at a perceived loss on commission for them.
But that's also just my experience.
