My grandmother recently gave me a bag that was given to her when she lived in South Africa.

She tells me it is rhinocerous leather

I want to post a picture but I am a little worried about the legality of owning it in the first place :wondering

Someone told me that after a certain year you cannot own rhinocerous leather. If you grandmother left it, then I am pretty certain it is legal. Google your question and your answer more than likely will be found. I was nervous about turtle skin and elephant, but the items were purchased long before it was illegal to purchase it. I cannot wait to see it. Does your bag have a designer name or is it just made from the rhino skin? That is such an awesome gift from your grandmother!

Thanks for your reply!
Google is surprisingly unhelpful :nogood: I would image it would be legal since it is old.
The interior appears to be calfskin. There is a small brass stud with a whale on it, no other designer markings though.

All the hardware (brass) on the handles is stamped with 605 (serial number?) and another symbol I can't seem to read.

I will post photos when I get a chance.

Please do post, once again I would love to see it.
Also if it has a whale stud, do you think it may be whale? I purchased a Corbeau and wasn't certain about skin type. I saw a woman in England on Youtube that specialized in Corbeau handbags. I emailed her and she contacted me and said it was Elephant of the 60's /70's era. It was from Africa, but made in France. So sometimes, google isn't the only avenue.

African Elephant - how incredible. What a wonderful find, French made too.

Little alligator clutch. The seller said it is croc because of the gold stamp inside, but I cant see any ISO. I think it is alligator, what do you think? It is so pretty, lightweight, very flexible and looks like the whole exterior made of one piece.
