Jane Birkin (who the bag is named after) is currently on her 5th birkin. She uses only one at a time and decorates it with stickers and charms.

Considering she's had one since the mid-80s and that's one of her very few bags (besides her famous woven baskets in the Summer) a pretty good testament to the Birkin's durability.

It was a lot bigger than a handbag. I believe it was a travel bag size. In the 1920s ladies 'handbags' were material or beaded for the evening (usually on a metal frame and with a chain) or a small clutch for the day.
As I recall, the original Bolide in the FSH museum is quite a small bag - definitely a handbag, not a travel bag. (Can anyone confirm this? I don't always trust my memory.)

The original Bugatti was shaped like 1923 Bolide (and 1923 Web Bolide) perhaps the one at the museum was the first to make it the newer shape with less pronounced 'shoulder'. I have 1 original 1923 shape and 2 the newer shape.

I think the museum bag was the first handbag version of the Bugatti; my recollection is that the larger version with the ‘squared shoulders’ was the travel bag and Madame wanted/was gifted the handbag/smaller version. I recall the bag as being in the 28 - 31 size range and a little closer to the current ’web’ style but not exactly the same. HTH!

OK, but that makes the travel version the original 'Bugatti', the first recorded bag to use a zipper.

Similarly the Plume blanket case wasn't a 28cm handbag until the mid-60s at the request of Deneuve, or the HAC cut to a 35cm coupe 'Birkin' in the mid-'80s. The point is, these bags already existed before they became women's sac de main.
