I'm reviving this thread before the year's end to indulge in one of my favourite pastimes: sharing some fascinating Hermès facts! I've put together a bit of a pop quiz, so you can test your knowledge. Enjoy!
Note: The facts and figures stated below are in reference only to the colour and leather offerings used for bags, SLGs, and costume jewellery. These stats include info for À La Carte/Special Order, Podium Order, and Push Offers. All information is based on data from my updated colour x leather list posted here.
- Hermès Pop Quiz -
1. Which leather has been available in the most colours? (Barring Chèvre Marocain, that would be unfair.)
Produced in over 160 colours, Clémence takes the cake! Togo comes in at a close 2nd with around 150 colour offerings.
2. Which colour has been produced in the most leathers? (Barring classic colours— i.e., Black, Étoupe, Gold, and Rouge H.)
Bleu Indigo.
3. How many colours has Hermès produced throughout the years?
Hermès has produced over 330 colours! If you figure in colours available for RTW, silks, and non-leather costume jewellery, I’m sure that figure would be even higher.
4. How many leathers has Hermès offered over the years?
Hermès has offered over 80 varieties of leather produced from over 15 distinct species of animals.
5. How many leather x colour combinations total are there?
~1800 (out of over 27,000 possible combinations)
Bonus Question:
As a bonus question, which has been the most widely produced colour from each colour family?

I did well on the bonus questions..(9 correct) but my burning question is..If Prune is the most widely produced colour in the purple colour family why does it seem so incredibly rare to find a pre-owned Prune bag???

I found that interesting too! In fact, I was absolutely certain Raisin or Anémone would’ve been the most widely produced.* The tricky part is that even though Prune was produced in the most leathers, it may not necessarily have been produced in large quantities for the leather(s) of the bag in which you’re interested. I will also add that Prune has been made in relatively few production years considering how old the colour is.
*By “most widely produced”, perhaps I should specify that I mean “produced in the most leathers”.

I’ll PM you a more detailed response, as I don’t want to veer too far from the topic of this thread, but the information I’ve gathered is largely an amalgamation of information from my late grandmother, my parents, my friends (some of whom work for Hermès), my own experience, all of our SAs and SMs throughout the years, and information from the forum.
Here’s my contribution: Earlier this week at my leather-working class, an Hermes artisan from back in the day said that in the mid-late 1980s there were only 250 Hermes leather artisans. Now there are around 7000 artisans.
I brought my Bolide 1923 30 (wink, smile & play) to my leather-working class and my instructor who used to be an Hermes artisan back in the day called it a Bugatti. She told me that this used to be the name of the bag up until the carmaker of the same name threatened to sue or sued Hermes for using the name.
