I do not have a secret jewelry stash. DH and I both work and contribute equally to a joint account, so he would definitely notice if I started buying high-dollar items without telling him. We never ask each other for permission to buy high-dollar items, because we trust that the other will not spend frivolously, but if I'm going to buy something expensive for myself, I'll just give him a courtesy heads-up about it...he does the same for me.

I do not have a secret stash - I buy my own jewelry (and everything else) with my own money. Usually, he is telling me to go buy the things I want anyway - and if I don't, he usually will get it for me instead :)

I love this thread, and the intriguing idea! However, DH and I have separate finances (always have). We do go halves on mutual purchases, such as new appliances, home improvements, vet bills, etc. We also each have our own savings (retirement, emergency funds, etc.)--but have agreed that, in case of emergency, we'll tap into them for each other. To make a long story short, I can spend my money as I choose, and so can he, so I don't need to hide anything from him with the jewelry! However, I don't always show him my purchases (especially if I had recently lectured him about saving money more :D). I am a bit of a shopaholic with the jewelry (I have no other hobbies, and spend little on other things, to be fair), but I always have made sure that my retirements and saving funds come FIRST, out of my paycheck. What's left over after the bills are paid is mine to play with. Heck, I get the stuff dirt cheap anyway...:D

All that said, when I buy that mythical bling-bling ruby, diamond and 18kt necklace I lust after, I may NOT tell him!

I don't hide anything from DH, all my own jewellery/ bag/shoes purchases are mentioned but sometimes he is so busy, it doesn't register. It is just something I am open about, even though what I buy myself is paid for by me. Significant pieces of jewellery he has bought me have all been chosen by me, we are both happier that way as it will definitely suit my taste. Likewise I asked him to chose his recent anniversary Patek, so that he would really love it. As I was lucky to have a large collection of jewellery passed to me, "This was my Great grandmother's/ Mother's" actually is the truth most of the time!
